Season 1 Storyline(s)

The Race For A Cure

Four years ago, Dr. Skinner released to the public “Hapna,” a miracle painkiller. It was cheap to reproduce, touted as having no side effects, and for four years, the world was in bliss – even with Dr. Skinner disappearing a year after Hapna’s release. But, he is back now and reveals that those who took the drug will begin dying in the next 30 days due to something in the drug, and the only cure is in his possession. But, to get the cure, people will have to find him – which is the task of Lazarus.

Axel Gilberto (Mamoru Miyano)

• Character Summary: Charismatic, though not perhaps a smooth talker, Axel is the type who definitely draws attention but may not be great at maintaining it or fostering it for something good. One could assume he is a lone wolf, with acrobatic abilities at the level of “Spiderman” without super powers, and a penchant for getting in trouble.

• Prison Sentence (S1E2): Originally, Axel just had a three-year sentence. However, with each escape, they doubled his sentence until, after escaping almost 300 times, he ended up with nearly 900 years of imprisonment.

Dr. Skinner (Koichi Yamadera)

• Character Summary: At one time considered a saint, up there with those who cured Polio and other deadly diseases, times are different now. Hapna, Dr. Skinner’s miracle drug which freed the world from pain, has now become a death sentence for the majority of the population – and it was designed to be that way. Thus making Dr. Skinner, who has made a cure, seem more like Lucifer, post-fall from heaven, than someone who deserves a pedestal in the history of medicine.

• Background (S1E2): Dr. Skinner, government name, Deniz Skinner, was born 6/11/1996, in Istanbul, Turkey. He lost both of his parents when he was 12 years old due to local unrest, and was raised by his grandmother. He has thus far won three Nobel Prizes: one in physics in 2031, one in chemistry in 2036, and one in medicine in 2040. He has also attended ETH Zurich and Cambridge and was a professor at Stanford University. He currently doesn’t have a wife or kids, but is heavily committed to the environment’s health.

Hersch (Megumi Hayashibara)

• Character Summary: Hersch is the leader of “Lazarus” and seems to work for someone within Babylonia City with government connections. But, her focus seems less on the politics and more on the result, as a noted lawyer, and assassin, depending on the needs for the situation.

Leland (Yuma Uchida)

• Character Summary: Leland was a student, someone with close ties to Chris, before Dr. Skinner announced the death of society. Now all his focus is on assisting the team, usually operating a drone, to get what Lazarus needs to do done.

Christine (Maaya Uchida)

• Character Summary: A woman with a love for shooting and blowing stuff up, Chris is a bit of a wildcard in “Lazarus.” She will just as much run after a stray cat as she will cozy up to a man and shock him to knock him out. Consider her a femme fatale living in the digital age.

Eleina (Manaka Iwami)

• Character Summary: Shy and reserved, if talking through a headset about something technological, Elaina is an ace. Having to talk to people in person? Especially strangers? This isn’t her skill and you might be better off having Chris handle that.

Douglas Hadine (Makoto Furukawa)

• Character Summary: While Chris drives a motorcycle, Douglas has a decked out car but, like Chris, he is a strong believer in using guns to solve problems and while Hersch is shown as the leader, Douglas positions himself to come off as second in command.

Jill (Yuichi Nakamura)

• Character Summary: Jill is a friend of Axel, whom he knew before they were reborn as Jill. She currently leads a local homeless camp and has an affectionate relationship with Axel. Someone she met when she was building her own rap sheet.

Claude (Yutaka Nakano)

• Character Summary: Claude is a former professor who taught at the same university Doug went to and even went to bat for Doug after a racist incident led to Doug losing his ability to attend school.

• Character Summary: Grandma Billinda is the one who raised Dr. Skinner, whom he loves deeply, especially for her baklava.

Visionary (Shoya Chiba)

• Character Summary: Visionary is not only a DJ, but also one of the few Elaina sees as her peers, as Dr. 909. His government name, though, is Donald McDonald, and while he might be slightly better than his associate, Sam, he is still a creep.

Delta President Ahmed Rahman (Daisuke Ono)

• Character Summary: The president of Delta Medicinal, Ahmed Rahman, despite his assumed influence and powers, is as desperate as the rest of the world, not only for a cure, but to make contact with Dr. Skinner. But, upon meeting Lazarus, he goes from losing sleep and going a bit mad, to actually trying to fight back and do something, to maybe push Dr. Skinner, or another party, to reveal themselves.

Lynn aka Popcorn Wizard (Neeko)

• Character Summary: One of the few hackers Elaina sees as her peer, Lynn appears to be Pakistani, has an obsession with saying HARDCORE, and it seems that while she might be hard to find, she has access to Elaina when she wants to reach out.

Hanna (Shion Wakayama)

• Character Summary: Hanna appears to be Eleina’s sister, who has long been jealous of the fact Eleina left and got her freedom, while Hanna stayed behind.

Billy (Satoshi Hino)

• Character Summary: Billy is a former MIT researcher who became obsessed with the AI named Naga, which was modeled after Dr. Skinner’s brain. Using the AI, he created a cult which, as of this episode, was on the brink of destruction due to a mass planned suicide.

Abel (Akio Otsuka)

• Character Summary: Abel is Hersch’s boss, but their relationship, unlike Hersch’s with the Lazarus team, isn’t coerced. However, many details remain unknown as Abel generally only speaks in the time Lazarus has left and the pressure he is under.

Inga (Sumire Uesaka)

• Character Summary: Inga is Chris’ former handler, when she was Alexandra, who was also her lover. However, three years ago Chris was involved in an incident where she was assumed dead and Inga kept her faith alive solely because a body wasn’t found. Thus leading to a lot of animosity not only for Chris turning her back on the agency, but also her.

Sergei (Hidenori Takahashi)

• Character Summary: Sergei is a Russian agent, secondary to Inga, who has a strong desire to end Chris’ life for betraying her country.

• Character Summary: Speaking exclusively Chinese, and the show not offering translations for such, the only thing you learn about Soryu is that he is a top-tier assassin, with a love for a material that is like piano wire, alongside using a blade as he gets up close and personal. However, this isn’t to say he isn’t apt for other types of weaponry if the situation call for it.

Schneider (Kensho Uno)

• Character Summary: A potential rival of Abel’s, who works under INSCOM (Intelligence and Security Command), and seemingly has something against the work and existence of Lazarus to the point of actively being more focused on sabotaging it than saving his, and countless other lives, as Dr. Skinner’s countdown continues.

Captain Hayes (Kenji Hamada)

• Character Summary: A potential frenemy of Abel, knowing him since Abel’s Green Beret days, Captain Hayes is a career military man who potentially is the type to smile in your face and stab you in the back.

Isabella (Ayane Sakura)

• Character Summary: Isabella is Leland’s older half-sister, through his father, who may not be fond of how Leland came into the world, via their father’s mistress, but she still acknowledges, accepts, and loves him as a brother. Even if his privilege as the male heir to the family causes fritction between them, especially with Leland not taking the responsibility seriously.
