Episode 3 “The Demon’s Whisper” Recap (With Spoilers)
New Town, Familiar Problems: Jinya, Ofuu, Ofuu’s Father
It’s 1853, and it has been 3 years since the last episode, and Jinya continues to be a demon slayer for hire. Currently, he is in the Edobashi area, and he learns from Ofuu, a local waitress, and her father, the owner of a local restaurant, that there is a serial killer who might be a demon. Now, they don’t hire him, for Ofuu’s father can’t afford to, but Jinya seemingly is willing to work to build his reputation so he seeks out what is killing people.
Some Demons Just Want Peace: Jinya, Mosuke
During his hunt, he runs into Mosuke who he originally thought was the serial killer and Mosuke thought the same of him. Jinya, with being attacked, was naturally inclined to think the worst of Mosuke and being that Jinya has the smell of demon on him, thanks to his arm, Mosuke thought Jinya was the serial killer.
Alas, both were wrong, but there remain questions from both sides. For one, why was Mosuke looking to hunt down a fellow demon? The answer: It not only killed, but brutalized his wife, Hatsu’s, body. In fact, it seems this entity generally just kills men, but with women, it abducts and brutalizes them, including in a sexual way, before discarding their bodies.
As for why Jinya is willing to take a job for free? While it did appear it was for reputation, which leads to money, it is also to get stronger, for his life’s mission is to stop Suzune. Mosuke seeks clarity on whether it is to stop and not kill, and Jinya confirms. He notes there is a level of hatred for Suzune, but it seems just as he has moved on from his ill feelings towards his father, maybe he could from Suzune too. After all, he still says that is his sister.
Not All Stories End And Begin In The Same Episode: Jinya, Mosuke. Ofuu
Despite Sword of the Demon Hunter appearing episodic, we don’t get a resolution to the serial killer situation. The episode ends with Jinya seeing Ofuu and walking her home, as Mosuke, who apparently is a “Superior Demon” due to age and having the awakened power of visibility, continues to hunt for his wife’s killer.

Review and Commentary
Highlights
Jinya Not Being The Quiet, Loner, Always Suffering Type [83/100]
When it comes to characters like Jinya, traditionally, they are the strong and silent type, who rarely crack a smile, have fun, and are depicted as bland but powerful. Jinya shakes things up because he is powerful, but with Mosuke, we see him get drunk and loosen up a bit. Not to the point of coming completely out of character, but enough to be reminded that while his default may appear to be dark and brooding, he knows he can have fun.
On The Fence
The Episode Ends Without A Resolution [79/100]
Too often, it seems that complicated situations can be handled in a single episode, and in “The Demon Whisper,” that ends up not being the case. The episode ends with Jinya walking Ofuu home with no clear sign of what is to come next. Is Ofuu, maybe her father, the demon? We didn’t meet other characters, so will we learn that not every situation will have someone associated with a named character?
We’re left with these questions at the end of the episode, and it’s surprising that things weren’t open and shut. But, at the same time, a show using as many episodes as it needs to tell a story is how things should be, and the same goes for what usually is the case for the week. It creates an element of suspense, surprise, and breaks the feeling of becoming formulaic. Hopefully, this isn’t the first and last situation Jinya encounters that may need more than one episode to be resolved.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [81/100]
With a multi-episode story, seeing Jinya loosen up, and expanding on how we can see demons through Mosuke, the latest episode of Sword of the Demon Hunter provides more and more reason to get long-term invested.
