Episode 7 Recap (With Spoilers)
Still Awkward, But Hanging In There: Jinya, Kyuuzou
It’s still 1853, and Jinya hasn’t really gone anywhere, and there is a growing need to ask, how much work is there in this area for him to take care of himself? But, considering we don’t see Jinya sleep, maybe he just wanders the area like a patrolman until he finds himself ready to eat or meet with his dad, Kyuuzou, like he does this episode.
But, rather than just a general chat, Kyuuzou has a potential job which sends Jinya looking into an artist whose work could perhaps channel or be possessed by a demon.
This Week’s Case: Jinya, Doshu Saga, Motoharu
Whether it was his original intention or not, Kyuuzou’s job for his son doesn’t lead to a demon but Jinya’s past, or, better said, Motoharu’s. The man who raised Jinya used to visit the artist Doshu Saga, and back before Shirayuki was born, he was complaining about her mom and how she treated him.
Now, of course, the two did eventually fall in love and grow close, fall in love, and that led to what has become known as the demonic painting “The Ukiyo-e of Kudanzaka.” The name of the piece, which can be broken down to “Cursed,” “Bewitching,” and “Attractive,” paired with Doshu Saga aging rapidly after he decided to start selling the piece, led to its growing legend. Making it so, ultimately, while this experience allowed Jinya to see a different side of his adoptive father, it ultimately ended up not leading to vanquishing any demons.
Family Bonding: Jinya, Kyuuzou
After spending most of the day talking about his foster dad, Jinya finds himself increasingly willing to spend time with his biological father, and Kyuuzou welcomes the company. They talk about drinking, and while things are kept light, you can see that in some ways, it is healing—maybe to the point of eventually getting to topics that are a bit more difficult to approach.

Highlights
Another Pay Off Episode [83/100]
Jinya’s staying in the same area so long is something worth questioning. After all, never mind gaining a reputation among humans, he would likely demons, too, and as talented as he is, increasingly, it seems most demons in that area either want to be left alone or are willing to integrate. So, I’m thankful there is some kind of push for him to talk with and bond with his father.

Now, do I want this to go somewhere besides cordial conversation and drinking? Yes. But, even with us past the halfway mark, it seems Sword of the Demon Hunter is not in a hurry – though sometimes I wish it would pick up the pace.
On The Fence
Questioning The Time Jump In Episode 1 [76/100]
I think what is causing me issues with watching Sword Of The Demon Hunter is that we saw Jinya in modern times, and with that came an expected time jump. Yet, we’ve been roughly in the same year and time period for more than half of the season at this point. That feels kind of bizarre to me.
What was the point of showing Jinya in modern times if we’re not even going to work up to that point steadily? It makes what can feel like necessary time in the past seem sometimes excruciating since there is much more ground to cover—not just in time but also in Jinya leaving this area.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [79/100]
According to Crunchyroll, this will have back-to-back cours (seasons), so I believe it is safe to say we’re going to get at least 18 to 20 episodes traversing into the fall. But as much as I like the idea of this not hitting episode 12 or 13 and leaving us on a cliffhanger that takes two years, or never, to get a follow-up, I still need the pace to pick up.
