Episode 6 “Summer Pockets” Recap (With Spoilers)

A Butterfly And A Suitcase: Kamome, Takahara

After spending a wonderful day and night together, surprisingly, Kamome turns into a butterfly. Bewildered by this, Takahara makes an effort, even calling the other kids on the island to help, to find Kamome’s suitcase in hopes to prove she was real – and the suitcase is found.

Was It All A Manifestation: Takahara, Kushima

With that, he goes through the suitcase, and, alongside finding Kamome’s underwear, he finds “The Origin of the Higenekos,” a book that was published at least ten years ago. This triggers an investigation that eventually leads to Takahara meeting Kamome’s mom, Kushima, and learning some rather tragic things.

For one, Kamome’s father is dead, and she has seemingly been in a coma for a year. Yet, somehow, Takahara has spent the last few days of his summer with her. On top of that, he truly didn’t meet her but did send a letter to her as a kid, after reading “The Origin of the Higenekos,” which Kushima wrote with Kamome as the protagonist.

In her letter back, Kamome wrote to Takahara, and many others, about ten years after the book’s release, heading on an adventure to that pirate ship, but, unfortunately, fate decided that promise would not be held.

The End Of Summer: Takahara, Umi, Kamome

Takahara and Kamome kissing

With Takahara focusing on Kamome’s dream of meeting all the kids inspired by the book her mom wrote for her, Umi gets neglected in the way she was back at home. So, with that, her vacation is over, and she leaves. Takahara doesn’t really ask any questions or follow up since he is so enthralled with working with the other kids to make Kamome’s pirate ship a tourist attraction. One in which the spirit of Kamome visits and even kisses Takahara for making the dream come true.

But, it seems summer is over by the time all this is done, leaving us to wonder what’s next?

Review and Commentary

Highlights

An Emotional Episode In More Ways Than One [82/100]

From small things like Umi’s face dropping when she sees Takahara doesn’t want to eat with her to Kamome being revealed to be all in Takahara’s imagination, it was a rather emotional episode that could conjure tears. Mind you, some parts didn’t shake the weeping tree, as it sometimes seemed they was laying it on a little thick with Kushima, only to reveal she basically has isolated herself and lives halfway around the world from her daughter. Granted, her daughter, who seemingly is in a coma, but with the way Kamome spoke to Takahara, it seemed like she was ready to die and was on her way out.

But, with being halfway through the season and experiencing something this intense, it does leave you, as with most episodes of Summer Pockets, wondering what’s next? Will Takahara realize his connection, maybe interest, in Shiroha is due to how much she is like Kamome? Will he start hanging out with the other kids more?

I mean, if summer is truly over, will we time jump to the following summer, or see what goes on during the school year, and if Takahara healed enough for old issues to no longer be at the forefront of his life?

Overall

Our Overall Rating [82/100]

Summer Pockets is at a weird place for us. With Umi pushing the idea it is the end of the summer, what does that mean for the show? Will we see Takahara again the next year, with his aunt still going through his grandmother’s things? Considering the relationships he built, will he maintain them over the course of the year? Heck, could Umi have misspoke or did we misinterpret her? Could it just be the end of her summer, her escape, while Takahara’s goes on?

To me, Takahara made a notable advancement in this episode fulfilling Kamome’s wish, but we remain unsure what’s next. Summer Pockets doesn’t have a clear path forward and with Kamome being presented as almost a figment of Takahara’s imagination, it leads to a multitude of questions that can make you wonder, if any of this is real.
