Episode 5 Recap (With Spoilers)

The Story Of The Missing Brother: Naotsugu

Sadanaga, the missing brother

Naotsugu, a samurai whose family comes from the Miura family, the vassal of Tokugawa, wanders about, claiming he has an older brother, Sadanaga. No one, including his parents, believes him or knows what he is talking about. But, with memories of his brothers, he searches for them day in and day out.

Getting Involved In Family Business: Naotsugu, Ofuu, Jinya, Natsu, Ofuu’s Father

Ofuu and her father even ask Jinya to get involved, for while he mainly focuses on demon matters, with demons part of the supernatural and bearing a bit of mystery to them, they were hoping he’d be able to help. Add in Naotsugu’s family has money, and Naotsugu is his family’s heir, so surely he’d have funds to help, and there was hope he would say yes.

However, initially, he says no, but eventually, he finds himself drawn to helping Naotsugu and trying to figure out what has led to Naotsugu remembering someone who potentially vanished without a trace. As this is done, Natsu pops up since Jinya has remained in the village for most of 1853, and it seems the two have a rare conversation.

Mind you, it is about Natsu turning 16 and potentially getting married to Zenji, which she is against, and Natsu questioning why 31-year-old Jinya isn’t married. He doesn’t go into the details of what his sister did to the love of his life or what she did either, but he simply presents the idea that he has resigned himself to the purpose of killing demons.

And from what it seems, the main hint he gathers by the end of the episode regarding Naotsugu’s investigation is that the daffodils growing on or near the Miura property might be involved.

  • Character Summary: The heir to the Miura’s family legacy, Naotsugu is a samurai, known for being far kinder and more approachable than most. However, between his obsession with swords and a long-lost older brother he speaks of, he is seen as a bit peculiar, but still far kinder than most in his position.

Review and Commentary

On The Fence

Losing Momentum [77/100]

I hate that I find myself always questioning the direction of this show, but, admittedly, it is starting to lose momentum. I appreciate Sword Of The Demon Hunter not having a case of the week, but I am beginning to feel that it isn’t using its time well and touching upon stories it could tell that could keep things interesting. Jinya sticking around his father’s town could have been beneficial if it meant speaking to his dad, following up on what happened when he was younger, and bridging things beyond Natsu’s role in his life.

Also, is it wrong to say I’d love an update on Suzune? With the push from that foresight demon, that Suzune would save her kind and be a major force for demons, I’d love to see how and what she is doing? You’d think she would maybe come after Jinya’s father on her revenge tour, maybe it would be revealed what truly happened between her and Jinya’s mom? Something to really keep her as a threat of note, for while Shirayuki’s death, and being beheaded, isn’t forgotten, it is losing its punch.

Add in Jinya’s biggest challenge is perhaps keeping a constant stream of money going, and he needs something to present a legitimate challenge or to keep his story moving forward, rather than the stagnancy that is starting to plague the show.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [77/100]

Point blank: Sword Of The Demon Hunter needs to move forward. Jinya has overstayed his time in his father’s town, and with nothing noteworthy happening for him or viewers, the show is feeling increasingly stagnant and in need of a jolt.
