Episode 4 “One Summer’s Treasure” Recap (With Spoilers)

A Jolt To The Memory: Takahara, Kushima

The more Kushima talks about a summer she had, 10 years ago, on the island, the more it seems Takahara was one of her friends – he just doesn’t remember. But, in this episode she makes it clear it wasn’t just her who knew him, they had a friend group that included a girl who was like a ninja, a student president and more. They were friends, went on an adventure, and the five of them together created this treasure chest and created a new adventure for each other for when they were teenagers.

All of which Takahara strangely doesn’t remember.

Back On A Adventure: Kushima, Takahara, Tsumugi, Shiroha

Yet, despite no memory of the treasure chest, when it comes to finding the keys, he seems strangely good at understanding the hints. This likely gives Kushima hope, since she was the leader and thus, wasn’t privy to where any keys were placed, including Takahara’s. But this doesn’t mean the two didn’t need help. The girl who often is seen near the lighthouse, Tsumugi, who often goes “Mugyu” provides some assistance, if just in helping Kushima and Takahara know a key isn’t at the lighthouse.

Then Shiroha gets involved, albeit unwillingly, since she still has issues with Takahara and doesn’t know Kushima at all. In fact, her grandfather had to be tricked for her to even come out, and it required Takahara having an awkward moment asking for Ao’s school uniform, and a handful of ecchi moments as well.

But, eventually, the adventure is over, and all the keys are retrieved from various places on the island.

Do You Remember Now?: Takahara, Kushima, Misaki

At times it seems Misaki may have setup this whole situation so her nephew could get away from his life and just be a teenager. I say that because, he still isn’t helping with his grandmother’s things and after taking a nasty bump to get a key, she lets Kushima spend a good part of the day helping out around the house – in a maid outfit.

But that isn’t all she does. She tries to take things a step further and help clean Takahara by washing his back. However, while Kushima is able to tease Takahara, maybe having a crush on other girls, she still gets far too flustered by seeing him just with a towel covering his groin to be around him in the washroom too long.

However, despite that awkward moment, the two are closer than ever and while Takahara seemingly doesn’t remember Kushima and that summer they spent together, being that no one else from the friend group is around, Kushima is thankful one person remembered their promise and kept their word.

Review and Commentary

Highlights

The Need to Ask What Happened To Takahara? [83/100]

It’s established that Takahara has gone through something within the past 10 years. It isn’t clear what, as of yet, but it does push you to wonder what may have happened? He has forgotten one of his old friends in Kushima, albeit after ten years of likely not seeing her, and it pushes you to wonder, maybe when it comes to Shiroha, maybe others, did he forget them too?

This pseudo-mystery increasingly makes you want to know more about Takahara’s life outside the island, and maybe life up until now in general. For while there isn’t this vibe that something supernatural or even violent happened, clearly there is either head trauma, a case of depression, or something else which seemingly has blocked or made Takahara lose what should be his happiest memories.

These Awkward Teenagers [84/100]

Generally, ecchi makes me roll my eyes and shake my head but there is something about Takahara being awkward with these girls, and sometimes them the same with him, which feels like those behind the show want to honor people his age rather than use the age to create scenes for viewers to stare at a teenaged girl’s body. Never mind, sometimes with her not fully dressed, in Ao’s case, or with her chest pronounced, in Kushima’s case.

That aside, Takahara getting flustered, Kushima maybe realizing she has feelings or is attracted to Takahara, to the point of him being naked making her uncomfortable, it is both comical and weirdly sweet in a way. Both are realizing they, and the other person, aren’t kids anymore, and while it remains to be seen what these feelings may lead to, it is interesting to think about Takahara having a coming-of-age summer, which could include not only adventures with Kushima but potentially his first kiss.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [83/100]

Summer Pockets maintains that balance between being sweet, the slightest bit naughty, and presenting characters who you want to invest in as individuals, as well as their relationships, as they spend the summer together and seemingly don’t just escape their lives, but potentially use summer vacation as a chance to heal and grow.
