Episode 17 “Acceptance” Recap (With Spoilers)
A Favor For A Favor: James, Captain Watkins, Kaos, Mel, Harry, Robyn, Marcus

James, Marcus’ brother, has a client, and he thinks it might be possible he isn’t on the up and up. So, rather than go to his brother to help as a police officer, he goes to him since he knows Marcus has the hookup with the Equalizer. Now, being that James is a defense attorney and with Captain Watkins having a watchful eye, Marcus tries to steer clear of involving Robyn. Add in Robyn is excited about Delilah going to prom and he tries to lean on Mel and Harry for most of the case.
However, as it becomes clear James’ former client is a professional assassin and Harry has to allow Kaos to help in the case? Things escalate to the point Robyn has to be involved and good thing too. For while Mel and Marcus handle a bomb meant to kill a dignitary, James, a former client, holds up Captain Watkins at gunpoint – as a hostage.
Thankfully, Robyn takes her down, thus giving Marcus a reprieve on the promise to take his badge. But, Robyn asked for a favor in light of saving Captain Watkins life.
Delilah’s Big Day: Delilah, Cam, Robyn, Aunt Vi

Delilah’s prom has finally come and she learns she got into UCLA! Now, actually going is a whole separate thing because that’s a huge decision. It would mean not only leaving Aunt Vi behind but also her mom, and Cam as well. He is perhaps her biggest worry to the point she doesn’t tell him – he ends up finding out after accidentally breaking one of Delilah’s straps to put on her corsage.
Luckily, Aunt Vi is there, and knows how to sew, but Cam’s eyes wander to the letter and when in the limo, there is a terse conversation. Not a break up one or one that ruins the night, but certainly a conversation where the relationship’s path forward, in light of the letter, is discussed. But, thankfully, once at prom things get light, fun, and thanks to getting a police escort, Robyn may not have been able to send off her baby before leaving the house, but she does get to see her with Cam before they enter the party.
Happy Endings Exist In Fairy Tales: Marcus, Robyn, Salazar
With Marcus still having a job, even growing close enough to James for him to maybe, finally, have dinner with him and his nephews, he is on a high. Robyn, with getting to see her baby girl off to prom, be one of the first to hear about her getting accepted into a college, and her man inviting her to a little getaway, she too is in bliss.
But, as shown for both Robyn and Marcus’ life, if things are too good, they won’t last long.

Delilah’s Story Coming To An End [85/100]

I will hold firm in the belief that Queen Latifah being The Equalizer is a Trojan Horse to have a coming-of-age story like Delilah’s on network television. Because, when you think about it, Robyn deciding to quit the CIA and become The Equalizer wasn’t just a morality issue, but because she wanted to be around and be there for her daughter more. She didn’t want to totally give the responsibility of parenting to Aunt Vi, even if Aunt Vi needed some direction and more at the time.
And, taking note of the Aunt Vi note, even for her, Delilah is often at the center of her universe and while we see both Aunt Vi and Robyn have a life of their own, while their orbit may take them far from Delilah, most episodes end and begin with how she is, what she did or is doing, to the point that, while everything isn’t about her, you can’t deny she isn’t more than a catalyst.
To me, seeing Delilah’s reaction to her mom’s kidnapping, the social justice issues she has gone through, her training with Mel, and even getting Mel to therapy, has made Delilah raise the bar for what should be expected for a kid on a show which appears to be about adults. Her perspective, a mix of being a child with some knowledge of what is going on, has really pushed these adults and has, when she is involved in some way, helped make the situations feel less like a tried and true formula.
For even though there was a time I wanted to see Delilah build up into being her mom’s successor in some ways, I’m coming to learn, realize, and appreciate they allowed her to be fairly normal. As I said, I believe earlier this season, getting to see a Black girl, who isn’t ambiguously Black, come of age is not easy to find on a major platform like CBS. So, the potential of The Equalizer beginning and ending with her journey, with Robyn re-integrating into her life, and seeing Delilah off to start her own story? It seems like the perfect end.
A Potentially Explosive Finale [84/100]
As of this post, it isn’t clear if The Equalizer is going to have a 6th season. The only thing that appears to be confirmed is, according to TV Insider, if this does get a 6th season, on top of it likely being the final season, we would not get 18 episodes. More so, we would get the shorter amount, which this show should have always stuck to, around 13, though honestly it might be better to go back to ten and be a mid-season replacement.
But, those thoughts aside, I do hope that if this finale is to be the last, they make it worth it. For one, don’t make a life and death situation where everything turns out fine. Bishop and Fisk weren’t major losses, and Bishop was honestly removed mainly due to the actor’s personal controversies more than anything. They need to lose a major player, and yes, I’m going to put up Marcus Dante.
That fake-out a few seasons ago, which went nowhere, alongside the Michelle Chambers storyline, needs to be made up for. Marcus needs to die, and I’d submit that if this gets a season 6, we get a full, CIA-backed, Robyn McCall to close out the show, taking on a season-long, if not majority season-long, mission. Be it to avenge Marcus, or with Delilah off to school, Robyn takes on cases beyond the tri-state area and requires her to go big to keep the world safe enough for her baby to come home.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [84/100]
While The Equalizer as a whole has been far from perfect, as it comes to the end, either with the next episode or next season, it feels like one which could honor what this all has been about: Robyn being there for Delilah, Delilah knowing who her mother is, and those two bonding in ways Robyn couldn’t when she was working full-time for the CIA and often leaving parenting for Aunt Vi.
