Episode 15 “Deception” Recap (With Spoilers)
Mommy & Me: Robyn, Delilah
With drinking, joy riding, and heading down a worrisome path, Robyn decides to set aside all she could do as the equalizer and focuses completely on being a mom. That means talking to Delilah about what is going on, giving an alternative to the narrative Delilah’s dad has planted in her head, and when Delilah learns her friends have all gotten into Princeton and she hasn’t’ heard back, making it clear that a degree doesn’t set her for life and she has to learn to pivot. Which, by the end of the episode, seems to get through her head.
I Don’t Want To Be A Burden: Mel, Harry

Mel is having what she calls “Episodes” again, which are panic attacks. She pulls a gun on a guy who gets aggressive with her, freezes when part of a mission, and keeps all of this from Harry. But by the end of the episode, they talk it out and seem to be in a better place.
They Got The Wrong One: Evelyn, Aunt Vi, Mel, Harry
Evelyn, Aunt Vi’s best friend, meets a charming con man who gets $250,000 out of her. Thankfully for her, Vi has Harry and Mel, and while it was a bit of a challenge, Harry is able to access the con man’s account and get Evelyn her money back. Now, it isn’t clear if he gets the money back for the other women he swindled, but at least Evelyn has her fortunes reversed.

Highlights
Robyn and Delilah Bonding [84/100]

We haven’t gotten an episode of Delilah and Robyn spending time together, probably in multiple seasons. In the entirety of The Equalizer, I would even say that if there were 7 episodes of Delilah and Robyn bonding, without Aunt Vi involved or them interrupted by a case, that would be surprising. So to watch them talk about Robyn’s dad, her upbringing, her show Delilah, where she got arrested, and undo the programming Delilah’s dad put in, which is making Delilah glitch a bit? It wasn’t necessarily cute and butterfly-inducing, but it does feel necessary and long overdue.
After all, wasn’t part of the reason Robyn quit working for the CIA was to have a better relationship with her daughter?
Mel Leaning On Harry [83/100]
Mel’s episodes coming back is understandable. Yes, she made it appear she was back in the saddle and moved on from her troubles, but anyone with any form of PTSD knows there can be a long stretch of good days, but bad days can come. So, Mel being triggered and thankfully going to therapy was wonderful to see.
But there does come the issue of not picking up bad habits in pursuit of good ones. For example, Mel seems willing and able to “burden” her therapist, but when it comes to Harry, despite how long they have been married and him knowing the source of many of her struggles, she doesn’t want to extend the same opportunity to him to be there for her. It creates what can’t be called an issue, but certainly a complicated dynamic as Mel has to learn how to open up to this person who is an outsider, while not closing herself off to people who play an active part in her life.
Thankfully, she seems to be on her way, but whether she may open up to Robyn and maybe take another extended break isn’t clear yet.
Edutainment With Evelyn’s Case [82/100]

While it is unfortunate that one of the rare times we see Aunt Vi get out of the house, without it being connected to Robyn or Delilah, and it leads to her meeting someone conning her friend, I guess beggars can’t be choosers, right? But, beyond that, I think it also needs to be appreciated that The Equalizer showed how con men take advantage of people looking for love, operate. Between checks being given as a gift, using the old school style of dating to put you in a dopamine bliss, as much as the drama was made to be for entertainment, hopefully, the signs, signals, and warnings given may keep someone from getting got.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [83/100]
The Equalizer stepping away from its formula feels almost like a breath of fresh air. Not seeing Robyn involved at all with the case of the week, nearly every character getting emotional, having some form of story progression, and being seen as human, is incredibly rare. Sadly, you know this is an off-episode, rather than perhaps part of a much larger change in the series, but anytime shows like The Equalizer stray from a tried and true path are worthy of applause.
