Blind since she was 14, due to Retinitis Pigmentosa, and in the foster care system until around that time, Murphy has had a hard life. One which included being attacked two years before the series began that might be one of the reasons she drinks heavily and is promiscuous. Yet, with the death of Tyson, she may just get her act together.

Murphy absolutely hates most forms of assistance due to her being blind.
She was homeschooled throughout high school.
Despite having her vision when she was younger, Murphy now doesn’t really remember what she looks like.
Murphy’s adopted father, he and Murphy are close and he might be the main reason Murphy has a job. For with her often showing up to work hung over, likely her advocate of a dad is all that stands between her and living off SSI.
While Jess is Murphy’s roommate, arguably her best friend is Tyson – a 17-year-old kid. One who has a little bit of a crush on Murphy and is the catalyst for Murphy possibly getting her act together. For with her believing Tyson was murdered, it forces her out of her usual routine of drinking and having sex with a stranger.
Dean is a cop, one who responds to Murphy’s call about Tyson possibly being murdered, and is the father to a blind daughter. From what it appears, he might be Murphy’s main ally in finding the truth about Tyson. If the truth can be found.
Felix is the person who compensates for the fact Murphy gets to work for free, and is one of the main reasons Hoy and Hank’s guide dog facility may still be up and running. Not to imply they are incompetent but clearly their nepotism blinds them a bit. But, when it comes to Murphy, Felix is kind of like an annoying brother who she goes back and forth with, yet knows he is there for her if in need.
It isn’t 100% clear who Nia is when introduced in episode 2. However, we do know she is in prison and Darnell answers to her. Also, she is aware of Tyson’s situation and is trusting Darnell to handle it.
