What’s A Man Without His Mother?: Lestat, Gabriella
As Daniel presented, Lestat did have a stutter growing up. But what he wasn’t able to surmise was the bullying that came from far more than a stutter. Be it his father or the siblings that didn’t die before adulthood, Lestat was the black sheep, and Gabriella was proud of them both being outliers. Granted, in 1772, Auvergne, France, it may not have been the safest thing for her, or best for Lestat, but they were also aristocracy – being eccentric was expected.
However, while Lestat had the privilege of being male and getting to explore, be curious, and find himself, Gabriella did not. So she read, languished, called everyone but Lestat in the family a cabbage, and basically waited to die.
Lucky for her, though, it seems once Lestat became a vampire, she became the first person he turned, and no sooner than that was done, they massacred the majority of the family, sans the children. So, there is a chance the descendants of Lestat’s nieces and nephews are out there somewhere.
Lifting The Veil: Gabriella, Lestat, Alex, Larry
In modern times, Lestat’s bandmates are freaking out. Alex, more than anyone, due to his moral compass, but the others? They have questions. Lestat is open about them all, even the annoying ones, which paints the idea that all the music is about Louis. But in the end, only Alex seems unable to continue. But, Lestat, benevolent as he is, encourages Alex to take some time. Not too much, for he is key to perfecting their sound, and Lestat would kill Larry to get back at Alex. But he encourages him to still take a moment.
As that happens, Lestat reconnects with his mother, with whom he has an incestuous relationship.
Let’s Not Make This Awkward: Louis, Lestat, Raglan, Christine, Daniel, Gabriella
The coven that Lestat likely wiped out, with help from Daniel, caused quite a bit of damage, and apparently, Louis owned the hotel. In fact, for the last couple of decades, it seems Louis has been making moves as he did when he was mortal and has become a bit of a real estate tycoon. Nonetheless, to coerce Lestat into meeting, Louis contacts, through a representative, Christine to have a meeting.
The meeting goes as you would imagine, with the book quickly becoming the focus over the damages. Leading to who Louis is having sex with, the name he goes by, and after Lestat has his tantrum, there is a road towards peace laid out. Louis is invited to the show in Toledo, and there, Gabriella gets to meet her vampiric brother/son’s ex.
It isn’t awkward, since the two don’t speak or get introduced. However, Gabriella’s ego does seem curious about what Louis may know about her, which is honestly little to nothing. But, it shouldn’t be omitted that Daniel and Louis had a short-form reconciliation too. Granted, it was quickly ruined since it was presented as a ruse so that Raglan could speak to Louis, but it wasn’t all bad.
You see, Louis still mourns Claudia, and Raglan has tracked down a vampire named Bruce. You remember Bruce, right? We met him in Season 1/ Episode 5 of Interview With The Vampire, and he assaulted Claudia. Well, Raglan and the Talamsaca seem to want Bruce handled, since apparently, he is still acting without care for others. They know Louis isn’t above acting recklessly, so they ask him to do this favor, which he may do so with joy.
New Characters in Episode 2
Gabriella (Jennifer Ehle)

- Character Summary: Gabriella, now going by Sofia, is Lestat’s mother, who loves him dearly but abhors the rest of their family. It could be said that the cold nature Lestat has comes from his mother, alongside the friendly, but sometimes distant way he loves people.
Review and Commentary
Highlights
It’s Very Clear Lestat is Gabriella’s Son [82/100]
Does Gabriella fix the issue we had in episode 1 of feeling like this show needs better supporting roles? Yes and no. Yes, in that she does boost up Lestat, by helping us get to know and understand him better. But, not due to the fact that she feels gimmicky.
Maybe it is because she is Lestat with the charm turned down and the possibility she’d snap your neck without much effort? Could it also be that the airs and graces she has about her make long-term interest difficult, for there is an inability to form some kind of parasocial relationship with her? It’s hard to say.
But, as for her proper introduction, she served her purpose, and with Lestat hinting he rarely sees his mother, I’m fine with her leaving in an episode or two.
Louis’ Revenge [83/100]
A part of me dearly wishes, be it season 1 or season 2’s Claudia, we got to see Louis in the diner, taken by a familiar face. If I recall right, season 2’s Claudia does make an appearance, but it isn’t clear when. But that aside, seeing him get revenge for his daughter could be a wonderful sight. After all, if we learned anything from Interview With The Vampire, it is that Claudia will probably be the person Louis longs for more than anyone else in existence – living or dead, including Lestat.
So, to give her justice, even in death, will be a wonderful thing to see.
On The Fence
Rushing Through Lestat’s Upbringing [76/100]
The struggle we’re going to have with this season is that it is going to bounce back and forth between Lestat’s past and present, and we haven’t really been taken by any of the new characters. At least, not in a way where we want to know who plays them, beyond having an accurate record for reviews or a character guide.
So with the rushing of Lestat’s upbringing, I appreciate the Cliff’s Note version, but a part of me also mourns the scenarios and stories we’re probably missing. For if this is meant to set the tone as we meet Magnus and others, I do think, in gaining more glamour, more energy, and certainly panache, we may lose a bit in the storytelling aspect of the show – and opportunities for not just entertaining, but impactful performances.
More Raglan? [77/100]
Here is the thing about Raglan: he is a good character. I’d submit the Talamsaca spin-off should have been led by him. But the thing about him as a character is that, because we’ve seen him in short supply, he has been able to keep his luster. He is appearing fairly often right now and I do wonder if him appearing more, and talking more, if that will make us like him less.
As shown, he is arrogant, using his organization as a means to gain power and influence, and that could lead to something fun. However, I don’t see him as a character who is made to complement others, but push, antagonize, and compete. So, whether he may shine or dull if he keeps appearing is hard to say.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [79/100]
It’s worth questioning, as things go on, how capable Lestat is of carrying this show, seemingly by himself. For while Louis is still around, Raglan certainly has his own version of gravitas, and there is a lot to cover before Akasha shows up, the lack of good supporting characters is worrisome. For even with Gabriella, she seems like a flash in the pan, and with how informative and entertaining the flashback was this episode, I don’t have my hopes up for Magnus in the coming episodes.
