Reclaiming The Narrative: Lestat, Louis, Daniel, Christine, Larry, Alex, Salamander, TC, Jarda
In 2023, Interview With The Vampire by Daniel Molloy comes out, and just when Louis and Lestat were beginning to reconcile. But, with Louis not only telling what Lestat sees as lies but doing so in a way so grand that he has completely stolen his narrative, his anonymity, and broken a major vampire rule in the process? Oh, Lestat is pissed.
But Lestat is petty, not vengeful. So rather than hunt down Louis, beat him within an inch of his immortal life as he did before, Lestat decides to take back his story. Across the street was a band, Satan’s Night Out. Lestat had been listening to them for a while. He took over that band.
Now, was the lead, Larry, happy about it? In the long run, no. However, it isn’t like Lestat didn’t gift them with money, a higher profile, and a constant stream of gigs. So, while Lestat was demanding, a perfectionist, Larry, his brother Alex, Salamander, and TC stuck with the band. They even dealt with the manager Lestat hired, Christine, who was mostly alright.
In fact, she was probably the closest to knowing the truth about Lestat. You see, rather than create a persona, Lestat became a slightly embellished version of himself. He even renamed the band “The Vampire Lestat” and for the sake of cover, got a man named Jarda to pretend to be him. Thus, allowing Lestat to feed and live his life with some level of ease.
Though the real kicker might be having Daniel join a 54-city tour to properly help set the record straight.
What If God Fears Us?: Lestat, Daniel, Baby Jenks, Gabriella
But as with all things Lestat, things don’t go to plan. A stop in Detroit leads to someone named “Baby Jenks” poisoning Lestat with LSD and MDMA. You see, in two years, Lestat went from being exposed by Daniel to being a touring musician, and it seems that in owning his narrative, he has rustled some feathers. Making his time in Detroit a bit dangerous, as a local coven tries to make a name for itself by killing him.
They are thrwated, of course, but Daniel had to help – which surely he will hang over Lestat’s head. But, throughout the episode, Lestat is constantly texting someone, and we’re led to think it was Louis. After all, they’ve reconciled despite new relationships and past trauma, and Lestat has never been one to collect friends. Yet, when it is revealed who the person is, we hear and see someone named Gabriella. A woman who is called many an affectionate thing, like mother.
The Failures: Armand, Louis, Lestat, Raglan
While most of the episode takes place in 2025, it seems it may also take place closer to the present day, but after something has happened to Lestat. It isn’t clear what, but with Armand missing an eye, Louis a foot, it surely was something grand. Far bigger a punishment than what led to Claudia’s death.
But, oddly enough, what brings Armand and Louis together, in the same room, isn’t mourning Lestat – it is an auction of his things. Which of course draws the Talamasca, so Raglan is there too, bidding north of 100 million for Lestat’s last known recordings, which narrate the episode, and likely will the season. But, as for who wins the recordings and what happened to Lestat? That will unravel as the season goes on.
New Characters in Episode 1
Lestat (Sam Reid)
- Character Summary: At over 265 years old, it could be submitted that, like many a vampire well past the mortality of humanity, Lestat is restless. He is financially comfortable, but in need of stimulation, and after the publishing of Interview With The Vampire, he finds himself enraged in the best way possible. For with the desire to take back his narrative, he is reborn a rockstar, and glam rock gives him all the fun of being outrageous and draws the kind of attention that makes those committed to the old ways nervous.
Louis (Jacob Anderson)
- Character Summary: The focus of Interview With The Vampire is a southern-born queer man now living a life of leisure while dealing with his demons.
Daniel (Eric Bogosian)
- Character Summary: An investigative reporter who wrote Louis’ partially unauthorized biography, heavily featuring Lestat, who is a vampire tasked with writing a follow-up focused on Lestat.
Christine (Jeanine Serralles)
- Character Summary: Christine is the manager for The Vampire Lestat, as a band, and is probably one of Lestat’s favorite mortals.
Larry (Noah Reid)
- Character Summary: Larry is the former leader of Satan’s Night Out, who got a bit of a demotion when Lestat took over and renamed his band.
Alex (Seamus Patterson)
- Character Summary: Larry’s brother, who Lestat sees as more talented than Larry, but a touch boring since he is straight-edge.
Salamander (Ryan Kattner)
- Character Summary: He is the bassist of The Vampire Lestat, and the way Lestat paints him, he is dumb. Just flat out dumb.
Jarda (To Be Determined)
- Character Summary: Jorda plays Lestat’s doppleganger, who is from the Czech Republic, that Christine hired to keep up appearances for Lestat.
Baby Jenks (Ella Ballentine)
- Character Summary: Baby Jenks is a young woman sent to Lestat’s concert on LSD and MDMA to set him up for death by the Fang Gang of Detroit.
Gabriella (Jennifer Ehle)
- Character Summary: Gabriella is a person of significance to Lestat and might even be his mother.
Armand (Assad Zaman)
- Character Summary: Armand is an acquaintance of Lestat and Louis’ former lover.
Raglan (Justin Kirk)
- Character Summary: Raglan is a member of the Talamasca, which has long tasked itself to watch over the world’s supernatural creatures, maintain items which could prove their existence, and step in when any get out of line.
TC (Sarah Swire)
- Character Summary: TC is the drummer whom Lestat nicknamed the abandoned bride.
Review and Commentary
Highlights
Old Blood, New Life [85/100]
Let’s be real, book-wise, Louis’ story was over in Interview With the Vampire season 2. But also, what made his story interesting was Lestat. Yes, the race swap brought more meaning to Louis, and Claudia’s end was heartbreaking. However, Lestat was a guaranteed pop, and Sam Reid quickly made you forget about not only Stuart Townsend but also Tom Cruise’s portrayal. He did better than one of the most well-known English-speaking actors in the world.
So when it comes to this third season, or one of the few spin-offs that felt undeniable, there was hope that without Louis grounding him, being his Debbie Downer, he would be unleashed, and he is. Now, this isn’t to say we aren’t clearly going to explore Lestat’s trauma and background, as flashbacks push, as well as Daniel surely will pester Lestat for. But this feels different.
Granted, will we lose some level of diversity? Yes, to a point. Akasha will eventually pop up, if she hasn’t already, but that is down the road, through a flashback. But I don’t think, even with Louis being demoted a bit, and Armand watching in the shadows like a rat, we’re losing much. Louis was a character who needed a #2, a strong supporting role, and Lestat doesn’t.
This isn’t to say he doesn’t need someone to play off of, as all good big personality characters. But the point I want to make is, Lestat is going to give the vampire side of the Immortal Universe new life, and maintain that, of all the supernatural creatures and paths we’ve seen, the vampires are going to remain the best of all the adaptations, and Sam Reid will continue to carry this show, franchise, and universe.
On The Fence
No One Introduced Pops, Yet [74/100]
While Lestat is an all-consuming character who often takes all the air out of the room, you’d expect the people around him to at least compete, right? Yes, Daniel’s sarcasm makes him stand out, and we have familiar faces who trigger nostalgia, like Louis. But as for the new characters? Lestat’s band doesn’t bring anything worth noting.
Heck, even Gabriella, as much as she is presented as Lestat’s mother and fledgling, doesn’t make you curious, or at least me curious. She seems like a Talamsaca: The Secret Order character who escaped and is trying to prove she didn’t deserve the axe like that show.
Now, granted, this is the season/series premiere, so it is a touch unfair to judge these new characters too harshly. However, with being a pseudo-spin-off of a property and character reinvented for at least the third time, you’d think those surrounding him could at least feel like supporting roles. Rather than fodder or sheep for him to play with or drink from.
The Music Is, Okay [75/100]
Being someone who loved the music from Queen of the Damned, it is inherently wrong to compare the glam rock of this show to the industrial rock of the film. But I will say, this music fits Lestat far more. Be it the excess, the vulnerability he tries to shield, or the pursuit of glamour.
I will say, though, the lyrics don’t stick with you, and I do find myself wondering, considering the collection we saw teased early in the episode, will we get more songs, or will it just cycle the handful that were in this episode?
Overall
Our Overall Rating [78/100]
While the music and supporting characters are a bit hit and miss, Lestat more than compensates for that, and even two seasons in, and three and a half years since introduced, the shtick hasn’t gotten old. If anything, new layers continue to be discovered, and more reasons to fall in love with one of the most iconic literary characters in the English language.
