The Lady In My Life: Kiesha, Riley, Darnell, Emmett, Bakari, Lynae, Nora, Patience, Shaad, Jackie, Britney, Shawnita, Mondo
It’s time. Kiesha and Emmett both want to propose to one another, and while Riley’s main focus is on them doing it, Darnell doesn’t want Kiesha to play “The Man’s Role” and seemingly will rush Emmett to beat her to the punch. Mind you, are things wonderful and perfect? No. Couples counseling is a topic both speak on, but it doesn’t seem bad enough for either to question the relationship, or potential marriage.
But while they are making steps forward, others are taking steps back. Bakari lies to Lynae about his whereabouts and what he is doing, leading to them breaking up or ending up on a break. Shaad? He goes to see Nora to get some clarity, maybe closure, and accidentally tells Patience, who isn’t upset but is definitely taking note of how Shaad moves, even if it is with good intentions.
What else can anyone do, though? A lot of the men on this show move funny, and the women in their lives often have to watch them blow up a good thing. It’s not even just those in relationships, either. Britney returns, and alongside Shawnita and Jackie, they are all taking note of Bakari working for Reg. For while they each have a different relationship, it seems they recognize Bakari does want out and to do something different, but like many in the game, the money you can make drops too low when going legit. This creates a real hindrance to legal options being viable.
Trust & Loyalty: Nuck, Bakari, Tiff, Lynae, Kenya, Jake, Desiree, Papa, Reg, Jackie, Rafi
While Lynae and Bakari are on the outs, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t still care. But what she does, which may complicate her life, is get with Kenya, and the two start conspiring against Nuck, including how to poison Tiff against him. Such as using a recording Kenya has of Zay saying Nuck killed Rob—something that may not just lead to a breakup, but dead bodies.
However, while those two conspire against Nuck, that doesn’t mean Reg is safe. Rafi and Bakari keep going at it, and Jackie sees that Reg likes chaos more than he wants a functioning group. Bad enough when Rafi tests her, but then he fights Bakari, and Reg does nothing while Bakari whips Rafi’s behind. This makes her get to thinking.
Which is something Papa is trying to stop doing, it seems. He goes from weed and drinking to the pills Bakari sells for Reg. Nuck roughs him up a bit for selling pills at all, which furthers their beef, but as for Papa? While Jake is surprised, and Papa’s mental health is brought up in the men’s group, no one follows up or really presses him.
Leaving one last thing to note, Jake. While Desiree plays games, he is working closer with Tiff, and it seems slowly, but surely, he could get dragged into more nonsense between Nuck and his brother. For with close ties to Bakari, Reg being his brother, and Nuck similar to Douda, and liking legit investments? It is safe to say that, in time, the life Jake never really participated in might be something he gets coerced into, no different than when Emmett was cleaning money for Douda.
Review and Commentary
Highlights
Pushing Smaller Characters More [86/100]
Whether it is Patience, Kenya getting into the gangster drama, Jackie doing more than being Reg’s backup, Shawnita revealing some of her past, or Britney’s return, characters who really don’t get their due get a bit more vocal and have storylines this episode. Now, are they all created equal? No.
Patience and Shaad’s relationship, paired with the reveal of her being Mondo’s mother, doesn’t compare to her introduction as a top-notch lawyer. Kenya having a recording of Zay, saying Nuck killed Rob, will cause drama, but once it is passed off to Tiff, Kenya is damn near out of it, unless she decides to avenge her father. Heck, maybe get Papa involved, and have him fully go to the dark side you could never imagine him going.
Jackie? Her talking to Britney felt random as hell, considering I don’t think they shared a scene before, but I love that the most interesting person in Reg’s crew is stepping out of his orbit. Then, with Britney, of all the young adults/late teen characters, she is only a character or two behind Papa regarding what she could give.
Though let me admit, I’ve been sleeping on Shawnita. Like Patience, that is a spin-off character right there. From her background running the streets, to going legit, running things in Emmett’s absence, and being a queer character? If they didn’t think Patience could handle her own show, I would submit having Shawnita join her, thus opening the door for Emmett, maybe a few others, to make cameo appearances.
But maybe until we get some consistency, we shouldn’t get too excited. After all, these are all female characters, and you know how The Chi usually treats them.
Bakari Beating Riff’s Behind [84/100]
I feel like not enough people get into fights on this show. I get gun violence is a major thing, but sometimes things don’t need to jump to bullets flying. Instead, someone saying the wrong thing can mean getting jumped or an ass-whooping. So, here is to Bakari reminding us that not everyone needs a gun on their waist to be formidable.
The Question of Who May Die First – Reg or Nuck? [83/100]
While many storylines are going on, the only one that doesn’t feel like it would end up being addressed in an epilogue, or left on an ellipsis, is either Reg or Nuck being murdered. The only questions are, will it be both, who will kill them, and what’s the why? At this point, Nuck is racking up enemies quicker than Reg, and while Reg is dangerous, it does feel like he is committed to laying low.
Nuck, too, has kept things calm, but let’s not forget the road lined with blood for him to get to this point. If he didn’t kill the person in the way, he either was present for the moment, or knows who did. Also, Reg, at this point, doesn’t have too many notable characters he can claim, while Nuck has at least half.
So, here is to the mid-season and lead up to the series finale, when you know it is going to go down.
On The Fence
New Version Of An Old Story [78/100]
While we don’t touch on the Devante story, with his new little group of friends, I must admit there is a growing sense of nostalgia seeing them, and comparing them to a young Jake, Kevin, and Papa. Note, these ain’t the same type of kids, for Jake was the most urban of the three, and he was nowhere near what we see from Devante’s crew.
But, I’m torn between us getting a legit next generation and also the constant recognition that the show doesn’t have time and isn’t going to make the effort needed to serve the characters or actors.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [82/100]
This feels like one of the first episodes in a long time that I genuinely enjoyed, and I credit that all to the show tapping into the characters who still have something to say and give to the show, beyond what we’ve seen over and over again.
