Storyline Recap

Like A Dog With A Bone – Yancy, Madeline, Rosa, Israel

While Yancy enjoys messing with the sale of the house next door, Nick’s case is his main source of entertainment, from stopping Madeline from running and interrogating her, which leads to Yancy and Rosa learning about Nick’s ghost patient scam via Nick’s on-call doctor, Israel O’Peele. It all is quite wonderful for Yancy, maybe even to the point of compensating for being bitten in the behind by a dog.

How Much Is Your Father Worth? – Caitlin, Yancy, Eve, Christopher, Israel

However, one thing that complicates Yancy’s investigation is Caitlin. Due to her siding with Eve, thinking her dad’s death was an accident, and receiving insurance money if she doesn’t complicate things, the case ends up closed. With that, Yancy doesn’t have much to push people to investigate anymore. What cop wants to open a closed case?

But what truly makes the whole situation complicated is Nick isn’t dead. Nick is Christopher, and while he really did lose his arm, he didn’t lose his life. However, Israel does for loose lips sink ships, and Yancy worried Madeline could soon be on Christopher’s radar.

I Think I Like Him – Rosa, Ro, Yancy, Bonnie, Johnny

Rosa spends a lot of time with Yancy investigating what was believed to be Nick’s murder, and during that time, she becomes quite charmed by him. Because of this, she asks around and picks up the attention of Yancy’s familiar, Johnny Mendez, who is the cop that caused Yancy to be transferred from Miami.

But, as much as Rosa is smitten, she doesn’t ignore the red flags. From Yancy’s ability to read people, his desire or assumption that he is often right, to his relationship with his ex-partners Ro and Bonnie, all these are taken into consideration. Bonnie, especially as Yancy shares without a hint of shame, his ex is on the run for sleeping with one of her students, who was 17.

Taking My Life Off Loop – Neville, Samara, Charles, Christopher, Dragon Queen, Ya-Ya

Neville’s time with Samara is short. He spends maybe a day with her, and once he has his check, off he goes, and despite being only 45 minutes away by plane, it seems the likelihood of another visit is slim. Mind you, there isn’t much left for Neville in Andros; he even has to sleep on Charles’ couch to have a place to rest his head. But, it is where his parents are buried and where he has called home.

Hence him continuing to pester the Dragon Queen and annoy Christopher, and even though the Dragon Queen’s grandmother, Ya-Ya, doesn’t like the perceived disrespect Neville pursues, he is consistent in finding some way to free himself, and potentially others, of Christopher’s tyranny.

New Character Descriptions

L. Scott Caldwell As Ya-Ya

Ya-Ya is the Dragon Queen’s grandmother, who has abilities of her own and takes note of those who disrespect their family and what they can do.

  • The actor is also known for their role in “Our Kind of People: Season 1 Episode 1.”

Zach Braff As Israel O’Peele

Israel is a drug-addicted doctor who recently lost his license to practice due to not only his drug addiction but unethical practices.

  • The actor is also known for their role in “Wish I Was Here.”

Gonzalo Menendez As Johnny Mendez

Johnny is a cop who is universally hated and has a special place on Yancy’s list because he is the reason he lost his position in Miami as a cop.

  • The actor is also known for their role in “The Good Doctor: Season 2/ Episode 7.”

The Gist

Like a dog with a bone, Yancy refuses to let Nick’s case go, so he continues digging deeper by asking Madeline questions, going to Nick’s company, and even speaking to a crooked doctor he worked with.

In doing so, he learns Israel O’Peele was helping Nick scam the government through the Midwest Mobile Medical company, and it seems the more Yancy learns, the more lives he puts in danger. | Zach Braff As Israel O’Peele

As for Neville? He gets his money from his sister, heads home to give some to the Dragon Queen, and learns about Egg roughing up Charles. He gets some revenge while trying to dig something up on Christopher – who is Nick, by the way.

L. Scott Caldwell As Ya-Ya
With that said, Nick being Christopher was a nice twist, and it complicates Yancy’s investigation a bit.
Granted, he has to go from Nick’s murder to Israel’s and others, but it’s still an interesting shift. | Gonzalo Menendez As Johnny Mendez

Review

Highlights

Rosa

Both as a co-lead of the investigation and as a potential love interest, I adore Rosa. She is able to go back and forth with Yancy like it is nothing and reminds you how charming Vince Vaughn can be, even if his character is low-key a butthead. Add in that she isn’t just a potential love interest but has a job that contributes to the case and her relationship with her family, and you have someone who is undeniably an asset to the show.

The Christopher Reveal

Christopher being Nick feels like something major. Is it something seismic? No. But the shift from looking for a dead man to someone alive who is killing people and building a hideout outside the continental United States? That’s something.

Add in the question of where Caitlin may end up with her dad alive, how we should shift our perception of Eve, and how far Christopher is willing to go to keep his secret and achieve his resort goals – I would submit a whole new level has been added to his case.

On The Fence

Neville

A part of me wants to get into this storyline. The Dragon Queen is an interesting character, and while Ya-Ya is a challenge to take seriously, there is something there. Also, Neville is an underdog. He is desperate, turning to a woman who does magic to save everything he has known. But, I just need the show to push Neville a bit harder, for Yancy is still eclipsing him in the worst way.

The B-Line Stories

From who tried to run over Yancy and Bonnie’s storyline, I’m not saying these two, and others I’m likely forgetting, are terrible by any means. More so, they are below Yancy’s main storyline and his budding relationship with Rosa and a bit above what Neville has going on. Bonnie’s case, in particular, is especially iffy since, it is a bit of a challenge to get into a storyline about a woman who slept with a kid.
