Episode 11 “The Summer Butterfly and the Night Girl” Recap (With Spoilers)
Another Reset: Umi, Takahara, Ao
Time resets again, and now there are no signs of Tsumugi at all (Thank God). However, there are some things to perk your ears. One thing in particular is Umi calling Takahara “dad.” He plays it off, sees it like when you call a teacher “mom,” but if you know, you know.

Beyond that? Ao reveals herself to be more than meets the eye. Never mind being knowledgeable, but she is also revealed to be someone who, despite how she speaks to Takahara at times, has some fantasies.
The Dream Girl For Someone Who Went To An All-Boys School: Ao, Takahara
With Takahara going to an all-boys school, Ao being someone a bit flirty, and taking anything Takahara says, which is ambiguous in a dirty context, is noticed. What especially gets to Takahara is that Ao seems willing to go along with whatever he jokingly proposes, but he doesn’t make a move. Instead, he stays a gentleman, often walking Ao home after she works at the convenience store, and while he may claim to her he isn’t catching feelings, she clearly is.
The Maiden With A Lantern: Ao, Takahara
As we’ve seen with each girl so far, there is an association with the butterfly, which Ao names: It’s called a Shichieichou. She knows its name for she is a maiden of the mountain and it seems, in nights during the summer, her family has traversed the mountains, with a lantern, seemingly seeking out these butterfly-like beings.
Now, what are they, why can Takahara see them, and what is their purpose in Summer Pockets? Only future episodes may answer that question.

Highlights
Ao Already Doing Far Better Than Tsumigi’s Entire Arc [85/100]

While Tsumugi was adorable, her storyline and the character development in that arc lacked the depth needed to care about her or her relationship with Takahara. So when it comes to Ao, I appreciate that she exists beyond a cute catch phrase and a few quirks. By establishing that she is quite knowledgeable, and the local kids respect her, it gave her layers. Then, in terms of the show’s commitment to ecchi, her wanting to be an active participant, even if she doesn’t initiate, brought something different compared to Shizuku’s awkward jokes about her breasts.
I’d even say, with pushing the idea she has fantasies of her own, she may even surpass Kamome in time. I mean, she has a strong start with answering the question of what these butterflies are, and if she can provide more information, then she will not just potentially have a good arc with Takahara, but also be of great benefit to the overall story of the show.
Poppa, Can You Hear Me? [82/100]

Sooner or later, the show is going to reveal more about Umi and the dad slip, and her association with the butterflies has me excited for when they approach that arc. For with knowing there was a bit of distance between her and her dad at one time, and her calling Takahara that, there is a deep-seated desire to see that storyline be the one which brings us to tears.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [83/100]
Can we all agree that the Tsumugi arc was cute, but need not be mentioned again until the season review, where we mark it as a low point? Cool, agreed. For while that slump certainly has made Ao a welcomed presence, I would submit just what has been built into Ao’s character from being some sort of mountain maiden, portraying her as smart, and then desires which Takahara may or may not be willing to fulfill? She is the person who should have been given the focus the second time around.
