Episode 12 Recap (With Spoilers)

They Call It Spirits For A Reason: Akitsu, Jinya

With Akitsu staying with Jinya, he becomes all too aware of Jinya’s neighbor being an alcoholic and his violent outbursts. However, with the neighbor becoming a demon, after his latest binge, Jinya and Akitsu find themselves having to take note of this sake being passed around for, alongside Jinya’s neighbor, it is just inspiring violence throughout the area.

Only One Person Can Be Responsible For This: Suzune, Akitsu, Jinya, Natsu, Kyuuzou, Harlot

Jinya leans on Harlot to get information on what’s going on and she points them in the direction of a merchant with noting a blonde might be involved. Each hint that Suzune might be involved enrages Jinya, to the point of him almost harming people and Akitsu having to remind him he is dealing with humans who can’t take being yoked up or hit as easily as a demon.

But, with meeting the merchant and learning about this sake spring, and all signs pointing that Suzune has created something sinister that, with enough drinks of the alcohol, it can use people’s negative emotions to make them into mindless and violent demons, Jinya is on the movie. His father, Kyuuzou, has been drinking Suzune’s sake non-stop, and with Natsu there with him, Jinya races to keep her from dying like his neighbor’s daughter did, when his neighbor, in a fit of rage, killed her and became a demon.

Review and Commentary

Highlights

The Suzune Build [85/100]

I would submit, we’ve waited for Suzune to show up thus far, but Sword Of the Demon Hunter wasn’t building up to her return. With doing so now, there is a level of excitement since you can see the years haven’t softened her at all. If anything, they have continued to rot her feelings and opinions, and now she wants chaos.

Is tainting sake the absolutely best way to do this? I mean, considering it is a common drink, a luxury item, and alcohol already has its reputation, maybe. Her tainting the water would have done more but who knows what Suzune is even using the taint the sake. Either way, there is a need to get excited again and this long overdue reunion should be bombastic.

A Sense Of Urgency [87/100]

Most episodes end with some kind of ellipsis, with Jinya rarely having to rush or do anything, for tomorrow is another day. Him running to Kyuuzou’s house, worried about his father and Natsu, that was something different. There was a real fear, a vulnerability presented, that we rarely, if ever, see from Jinya.

It leads me to believe, while sometimes the show gets a little janky, maybe it has finally hit its stride?

Overall

Our Overall Rating [86/100]

If it is to be believed this will have 24 episodes, and we’re at the halfway point, it feels safe to say that, while the odd jump in time may throw things off, at least while in the Edo period, things will hold steady with Sword of the Demon Hunter.
