Recap
Addressing The Wyverns In The Room: Gnome, Uchimura, Ulmandra
The Calamity is a series of waves of Wyverns attacking the Demon Lord’s kingdom. It isn’t clear why they are doing so in this episode, but their focus is on one particular fort, Demon Fort, made of three citadels. Gnome and the demi-humans have been doing their best there, and Ulmandra and the demons have also been working hard to defend against the onslaught.
However, while all of them work under the Demon Lord, there is a disconnection, which Uchimura finds himself having to fix. In his mind, a lack of strategy, issues with logistics, and infighting will doom them. With this in mind, he created the Sword and Shield strategy.
In many ways, it creates a separate but equal system. Demons are kept from demi-humans unless it is time to battle. Since demi-humans use physical weapons, with bows and arrows being a major one, they are the first line of attack and start things when a wave approaches. Demons, with magic and a panache for close-quarters combat, run in, pumped up, and use spells, if not their bare hands or weapons.

The combination inspires Gnome, Ulmandra, and the various entities that watch Uchimura lay out his plans. He even solves the food issue by ensuring the allocation goes to the right places since demons burn off food more often, so they need to eat more than demi-humans. But, of course, with food being scarce, seeing demons in grandeur and then what can look like they are being overfed causes issues. Hence, yet another reason for the separation.
The Calamity Itself: Uchimura, Ulmandra
But, what wasn’t a factor in Uchimura’s plan was a change in pattern from the Wyverns. For the most part, the wyverns were attacking one citadel, so that was the focus and where most of the resources were. However, with a pattern change, wyverns passed the fort and went straight to the demon lord’s castle.
Thankfully, Ulmandra is able to hold them off, but not without massively depleting her energy. This leaves the question of why the wyverns are attacking essential to keep the Demon Army from collapsing and undoing all the work Uchimura has done since episode 1.
Predictions
- I feel like they are disrupting their mating migration or something similar, which is causing issues.
Question(s) Left Unanswered
- How did the Demon Lord get Demi-Humans and Demons to work side by side, even if dysfunctional, in the first place?

Highlights
A New Arena To Explore For Uchimura [83/100]

Thus far, we’ve seen Uchimura primarily working with leaders, business owners, and people in some form of a power position. The same goes for this episode, as he works with Gnome on strategy. However, what changes in “Sword and Shield” is that Uchimura has to address and inspire the people.
At this point, Uchimura has a reputation as a deal maker and is formidable in business, but I wouldn’t say he is a people person. He sticks to his crew, the bartender, who may or may not live in his head, and doesn’t have casual friendships or relationships with common people. So with that in mind, having to position himself not as a business leader, but some kind of general over an army of beings, all of which who could easily snap him in half? That’s something new.
But, as shown, Uchimura is capable and can excel in such a position. In fact, even with him doubting himself, it is wonderful to see the Demon Lord continue to be right in his assessment of Uchimura. He is a workhorse who needs new challenges, responsibilities, and just rewards so that there is a balance in the extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. He needed to feel like he not only had a job but was needed, had autonomy, and was trusted to do what needed to be done.
Honestly, as someone who works a 9 to 5, even though we know so little about the Demon Lord that it does raise an eyebrow, it does help you understand, even without much explanation, how he secured the loyalty of his other generals, why they fight so hard, and why they have only spoken badly regarding him when they initially underestimated Uchimura.
