Signs, Signals, and Warnings – Jodie, Father Cruz, Father O’Higgins, Sarah, Lemuel

With all the attention Jodie is getting, different people have different reactions. Father O’Higgins, who remains at Father Cruz’s old church, prays people come to their senses as he sees a fever taking over the town and surrounding areas. And while he may not feel like God is speaking to him, he hopes they hear his prayer.

As he prays, Sarah hunts down Lemuel, but while Sarah is scrappy, it seems she isn’t well-trained, for Lemuel turns the tables on her. But luckily for her, he isn’t here to kill Jodie or her but rather to protect Jodie. Now, it isn’t clear why, who sent or is backing him, but he does warn others are coming. Which pushes the question of whether he has backup coming because him pulling a Denzel Washington “The Equalizer” trick doesn’t inspire much confidence.

Lastly, there is Jodie. With Father Cruz by his side, you may expect the worst. That Father Cruz, like Jodie’s friends, would push Jodie more and more to benefit from his power, but instead, he warns Jodie, gives him the good book, and reminds him of the seven sins. All of which Jodie, as temptation comes to him in many forms, he realizes he is easily susceptible to.

The High Of A Prince And Low Of A Peasant – Carlos, Angelo, Jodie, Magda, Hipolito

Despite Father Cruz’s warning, Jodie can’t help himself. Magda becomes damn near a plaything for him as other girls kiss, flirt, and even wash his feet. Hipolito warns him and even feels scorned by him, but Jodie doesn’t care. He is beloved, giving speeches and taking away people’s pain, and it seems to him he can do no wrong.

But that isn’t the case. Magda learns of what Jodie is doing behind her back, and they end no sooner than they began, especially since he ignored her request to help find Santos, her older brother. However, that isn’t the only person disappointed by Jodie. Angelo, who struggles with loving his father since his father is a shell of a man, says cruel things to him, and this causes Carlos to hang himself. Angelo doesn’t get to his father in time and seemingly wanted to hide or preserve him, maybe hope that he could bring himself to Jodie to bring him back from the abyss once more. But, once his little sister saw her father’s corpse, Angelo knew it was over.

The Difference Between A God And False Idol – Tuka, Angelo, Jodie, Sarah

It’s not lost on Tuka that Jodie is doing the most, and he tries to talk to him. Heck, he tries to talk to the people to recognize while Jodie is great, we can’t forget the virgin mother and the Gods who served us before Jodie arrived. This isn’t taken well, and within all the commotion, things go from verbal altercations to physical violence, and on cue, Angelo shows up.

Jodie tries to stop it all with a booming voice, but even his presence and voice can’t heal Angelo’s broken heart, and with it becoming known Jodie’s touch takes away people’s pain; Angelo doesn’t want him near. If anything, he wants revenge since he holds Jodie responsible for his father’s death. So when Jodie approaches, he lets off a shot, and Tuka ends up killed.

Sorrow comes over the community like an eclipse. Also, on cue, Sarah shows up, and after seeing how he cannot handle his power, responsibility, and attention, Jodie is ready to leave just as things are about to go to hell in a handbasket.

Review

On The Fence

The Death of Tuka

I feel like the sole purpose of Tuka’s death was shock value. It was to drum up some sort of energy in a rather ho-hum show which wasn’t really delivering much worth noting. So, what better than to show a man hang and the killing of a 12-year-old to gun violence?

The problem is, as much as Tuka was a beloved character, WE BARELY GOT TO KNOW HIM! Yes, we knew he was indigenous, polytheistic, and certainly adorable, but because the show long abandoned him and the rest of Jodie’s friends and made them nothing more than people who he hung out with, what emotional impact could there have been?

Lack Of Excitement For The Finale

What are we supposed to be excited about? Whatever Sarah was running from catching up with her? We barely got a name, what they are willing to do or capable of. Jodie has blown up his friendships, and honestly, while the love triangle Magda was in never was a hook for the show, now we especially hope she has moved on. Maybe that can make her older brother finally matter in some meaningful way.

Magda (Lilith Curiel)
“Magda (Lilith Curiel),” The Chosen One, “Faith,” directed by Everardo Gout, 2023, (Netflix)

My bad, if her brother meant something, we would have learned something beyond his name. We would have learned what her relationship was like with him. Heck, we would have gotten more of Magda’s home life to see why she latched onto Jodie for some sense of affection and attention that makes her feel safe.

Yet, we got nothing. Even Hipolito’s situation with his dad, which you’d think would have been pushed more to give him a solid reason to be mad at Jodie for disrespecting the person he felt could make him happy – despite the life that could be his fate. With all my heart, I just hope this isn’t the type of show that decides to end on a cliffhanger in hopes that people will clamor for a second season, since it finally decided to get good.
