Summary
With the coming of age ceremony over, the focus of Emilico and Kate has shifted to potentially usurping Lord Grandfather’s rule. But, with so many sipping his soot and putting them firmly in his grasp, it is hard to make headway. Add in the boys and girls being separated, then the dolls from their shadows, alongside those who have shown themselves talented with soot and those who have not? It makes the potential of awakening those under the spell or talking to those who aren’t daunting.
Why? Well, on top of Barbara and Barbie announcing a potential intruder in the mansion, there is Susanna and Maryrose, who are the handlers of those who made it beyond the coming of age ceremony. Susanna, in particular, is quite dangerous as the soot instructor since her full powers aren’t known, and she is a bit of a trickster. Luckily, her face, Susie, isn’t as astute and doesn’t have the powers to impede Kate and Emilico’s plan.
Things To Note
What Could Happen Next
- Kate potentially being forced into accepting John’s proposal
- Learning Kate isn’t the first one who wished to act against Lord Grandfather, and learning some paid for their rebellion with their life

Highlights
The Personalities Of These Mentors
It has been rare to meet a single character on “Shadows House” who hasn’t had a notable personality. Whether it is the raging Barbara and Barbie, the sweet Emilico and Kate, or the eccentric John, no one has shown up and not left an impression. However, adults, or even those in their late teens, take it to the next level.
From the hugging and outright love they show the kids to Susanna showing herself to be a trickster, it’s quite exciting to see who will be a friend, foe, or just entertaining to watch.
A Further Understanding of Soot
For the most part, Soot has just been shown as a means of enchantment, some version of powers, and a nuisance that can create monsters. However, learning it is part of the Shadows being economic powerhouses? Never mind Barbara, on her own, producing 60% of the family’s total output? It pushes the idea that, with us knowing the main players within the house, now it is time to further establish how ranking works and what keeps people in the house. Not to forget how Lord Grandfather even got into this position in the first place.
The Master Robe Mystery
It’s early on, but the idea of someone breaking into the Shadows’ house is interesting mainly due to the effort made to keep people from leaving without permission. So for someone to get inside, potentially a human looking for their kid, creates intrigue. Especially if they decide to fight a Shadow since it isn’t clear if a human vs. a Shadow would show how vulnerable shadows really are.
