The Boy From My Childhood: Goblin Slayer, Ushikai

The story is, the Goblin Slayer and Ushikai grew up together. That is until Ushikai found herself moving away and the Goblin Slayer, just a boy then, being left behind. However, life happened, a good portion of Ushikai’s family was killed by goblins and, eventually, they reunited. It was only 5 years ago but it is kind of like where they left off. The only difference being the Goblin Slayer is a bit distant, not all that talkative, but that doesn’t change things for Ushikai. Whether her feelings for him are romantic or platonic, she likes his company, he makes her feel safe, and so she waits for him to return.

Ushikai (Iguchi Yuka)

My question: Does this man sleep with his armor on? He eats with it on. Also, does he bathe? Considering all the blood and gusts that surely splatter onto him, this has to happen sometimes right? Does he have Ushikai watch out for him or does he just walk in, armor on, into water, and pretend the metal is his skin?

Then again, could it be that beneath the armor he is hideous? Taking note goblins attacked his village, did the usual to his sister, and yet he is alive, likely he has scars if not burns. So maybe the armor is always on so he doesn’t scare Ushikai off. Especially considering her uncle, who she lives with, seems leary of him enough just with him being a bit aloof. Imagine if he walked around looking like Freddy Krueger.

It All Adds Up Eventually: Goblin Slayer, Onna

With there being dragons, trolls, and who knows what other kind of monsters, there is a need to question how did the Goblin Slayer become silver ranked? Much less, how does he make a living? Well, based off the way people talk about him, it seems he does spend a lot of money on armor and weapons, so he saves cash there. Then, as for how he became a silver member? Experience. If you remember the first episode, the Goblin Slayer would count how many goblins he killed. So it could very well be all that added up and eventually got him his silver rank.

Something which, honestly, doesn’t seem to be anything more than a title. It doesn’t mean you get first dibs for quests or exclusive quests for your rank. It’s just a title and something to brag about. Which doesn’t seem to be Goblin Slayer’s thing, so why he even makes a big deal out of it is slightly beyond me.

Especially since he isn’t necessarily aiming to be a hero. Despite how things appeared in episode one, when he saved Onna, his priority isn’t necessarily saving people. His aim seems to be attacking known goblin nest and that’s it. Leading you to wonder, considering there are other, bigger, more lucrative, monsters out there, is it just because goblins are more frequent that he goes after them? Or because of his personal vendetta?

Commentary

The Goblin Slayer questioning how to seem more like a silver.
Goblin Slayer: It’s hard to act more like a silver.

We got to see a lot of faces that were also silver members but had no respect for Goblin Slayer. Also, they seemed to lack any interest in goblins as well, so how and when will they cross paths for us to get to know them? Also, are we going to get Onna’s backstory as well or are we going to stick to her being a teenager who hangs with the Goblin Slayer and helps him roast goblins?

Also, considering, over the course of a month working with Goblin Slayer, she gained experience and a new spell, miracle, as they say, do all spellcasters get new magic? What about people like the Goblin Slayer? Is experience for them just less stupid and life-threatening actions or do they get some kind of power and skill?

Oh, and who is the governing body who decides what of the ten ranks you are? As you can tell, I have so many questions.

Collected Quote(s) & .Gifs

“Imagination is a weapon. Those who lack it are first to die.”
— Goblin Slayer

Highlights

  1. We got some world building and character building this episode.
  2. It really established that what happened in the first episode wasn’t for sensationalism purposes, that’s just how things are.
  3. The episode gave us a soft introduction to who many of the other silver members are rather than having us drown in keeping up with who is who all at once.
