Not Another Church Movie (2024) Movie Review

“Not Another church Movie” is barely a parody of Tyler Perry’s work and person, it is an hour-and-a-half series of insults.

Character Description(s)

Taylor Pharry

Well off before he even touched the film and TV industry, Taylor Pharry is a man who seemingly could do it all. But thanks to God, he got into entertainment, and while he may never earn his father’s love or put rumors to rest, he is a Pharry; at least he is successful.

  • The actor is also known for their role in “Alaska Is A Drag.”

God

With a motorcycle, a drink, and a sense of humor, God in “Not Another Church Movie” leans towards the more cruel depiction. Which is shown when people are sent to hell for not laughing at God’s jokes.

  • The actor is also known for their role in “Strays.”

Hoprah Windfall

While still influential, Hoprah Windfall has seen better days. Her magazine is flailing, and her name doesn’t carry weight at the box office, so now she is ready to step back from the spotlight a bit and thrust someone into her place.

Monte Carlo

A character used to parody the “Daddy’s Little Girls” movie, Monte Carlo is someone Taylor tries to help, but being that Monte is a bit ghetto, while he may not squander an opportunity, he doesn’t rise to the occasion as he should.

  • The actor is also known for their role in “Night Shift.”

Julie

Julie is a prosecutor who has immense trouble dating, no matter where she looks, and it doesn’t seem things are going to get better.

  • The actor is also known for their role in “Dance For Me.”

Beverly

Beverly’s story is a parody of “Meet The Browns,” with Beverly being Angela Bassett’s character.

  • The actor is also known for their role in “Fantasy Island: Season 2/ Episode 11 ‘Peaches & The Jilted Bride.’“

Ellen

Ellen’s character is a parody of “Diary of A Mad Black Woman.”

MaDude

A matriarch of their family, MaDude is the one who brings the family together and brings the drama that helps them realize they aren’t as ghetto as they think they are.

On The Fence

Is It A Parody Or An Outright Diss?

From implying Tyler Perry is gay, reminding us of his battle with the Writers Guild of America in terms of exploitative practices, calling out his writing, and so much more, “Not Another Church Movie” goes beyond what “The Boondocks” did and borderline presented their version of Kendrick Lamar’s evisceration of Drake.

However, the problem with Johnny Mack’s writing is that it is rarely funny and doesn’t even present critiques you haven’t heard before. Now, this isn’t to say you can’t appreciate the audacity and the fact actors like Jamie Foxx, Tisha Campbell, Jasmine Guy, Kyla Pratt, and more joined in on making fun of the actors and characters that are the foundation of Tyler Perry’s empire. But, if this is to be seen as a comedy, it should be seen as lazy, with meek jokes.

For example, its “Madea Goes To Jail” parody shows their version of Madea, MaDude, getting an erection while showering with other women. Also, the extra padding put on Tisha Campbell as she portrays Tamela Mann and Cora dances that line between trying to insult someone and crafting a joke. Never mind, Yves B. Claude’s version of Mr. Brown being a straight-up minstrel show character.

And mind you, this isn’t to say Tyler Perry has been perfect, made the best cinema or Black cinema. However, after a certain point in watching “Not Another church Movie,” it is difficult to not just see this as a movie that just wants to hate on Perry’s success since it has been elusive to others.

Not Another Church Movie (2024) Movie Review

Summary

While “Not Another Church Movie” reminds you why parodies are barely made anymore, you have to applaud the audacity of Johnny Mack and those involved to go after Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey to a point, as they did – even if the jokes and commentary veer towards being juvenile.
