Movie Summary

Buddy is a magical unicorn who, every episode, shares lessons with four kids and some of his friends. But while Buddy looks like a TV show, there is no network, no camera, and it isn’t clear how anyone gets to his magical world. The only thing we know for sure is that the only way out is death – tee hee.

How It Plays With Your Nostalgia [85/100]

Like many kids born in the 90s, I watched Barney. I could even say the first CD I ever owned was a Barney CD. So when looking at Buddy, you can see him as a Barney knock-off, spin-off, or competitor. From the singing to the voice, it all makes you feel like a kid again, and that is the key to what makes the horrific moments hit.

The Dark Comedy [84/100]

While Buddy is a violent movie, it isn’t a traditional horror movie. There aren’t jump scares or a tone that feels serious and like there is pending doom. It’s all about this giant unicorn being who sees every day as an episode, and if you don’t follow the script in his head, bad things can happen, and at first, it’s funny.

After all, you walk in knowing this is a horror movie, so when one kid decides not to go along with what Buddy has planned, you expect the worst. Then, as gore is introduced and Buddy loses it a bit, what would be scary for kids might be a bit shocking for adults. But, it’s mostly in fun and feels like something you’d imagine from the Twisted Childhood Universe – specifically something akin to its latest release, Pinocchio, with Buddy just having less gore, no nudity, and less of an explanation regarding how Buddy came to be and continues to exist.

Attempting To Understand How Buddy’s World Exists and Works [77/100]

One thing which is an issue for us, especially with horror movies, is wanting to understand how things work. How does this magical item work and who made it? How can a demon be defeated? With Buddy, the question is, where did Buddy come from, how does it exist, and why? Never mind, if Buddy isn’t stuck in time, on some defunct network, how does it bring people into its world, and what is its world based on?

For you and me, watching this, it is clear it is based on a PBS or public access show. But in the world of Buddy, what is the source? This isn’t answered, even when we’re shown how Buddy brings people into his world. Then there are visually notable scenes at the end of Buddy which go completely unexplained. Leaving you potentially feeling that a sequel is required to get the full story.

Our Rating (82/100): Positive (Worth Seeing)

Buddy has the potential to be one of the best horror movies of the year, mainly because it doesn’t fit in with your usual slasher horror or focus more on blood and guts than story. Now, Buddy may not answer all your questions, but it doesn’t leave you frustrated about lacking answers either. It leaves you intrigued, actually wanting a sequel, and wanting to understand what could be next?

That is something very few horror films do well, as each seems a bit too geared towards being a franchise, rather than making the introduction to their universe worth further exploration. Hence the positive label, for just the taste of what Buddy gave us is by no means enough. From what it teases and leaves unanswered, you are going to want more.
