Movie Summary
With a big transition in their relationship about to happen, with Sage becoming the sole income, one of the last things Diego does before this happens is rent a mansion in the middle of nowhere as the last hurrah. Sage is initially down for it until Cin and Will show up.
From what we’re told, the mansion got double-booked, and rather than argue about who gets to stay, they all try to make the best of the situation. However, with Cin and Will showing they aren’t just eccentric, but mischievous, Sage and Diego find themselves sometimes put against one another as they find themselves entering a nefarious game.

Review and Commentary
Highlight(s)
It’s Hilarious [84/100]
I wouldn’t call Bone Lake grade-A funny, but it has a strong potential to cause you to laugh. At times, the characters acknowledge the absurdity of a situation, give a look, or throw a line that is unexpectedly funny for a film that sometimes comes off like a sex thriller.
How The Story Evolves [85/100]
Despite how the movie begins, after a certain point, as Cin and Will tease and tempt Sage and Diego, Bone Lake evolves into a romantic drama as it picks apart Sage and Diego’s relationship. It brings up the financial issues, potential trust issues, and if you didn’t know better, you’d think that was what the movie is about – not a serial killer or something like that.
But that’s what makes Bone Lake interesting. Ultimately, it is about people who died in or around Bone Lake, but it offers you more than people screaming, dying, and the type of sexual situations horror movies are known for. It offers you a movie that could maintain your intrigue, even if you removed all the violence.
It’s Violent [82/100]
With that said, this movie will scratch an itch for those who want their horror movies to cause you to be a bit squeamish. To be 100% honest, it’s more so the beginning which succeeds in that than the violence towards the end of the film. But when the killers start to make their move, you shouldn’t be disappointed by what they do or how our heroes react.
You Care Who Lives Or Dies [87/100]
Whether it is Sage, Diego, Will, or Cin, you get invested. Yes, Will and Cin definitely have something wrong with them, but as you wait for the killer to arrive, even with them seemingly looking to break up Sage and Diego, they are just too interesting to want them to be the first killed off. Never mind, considering where Diego and Sage’s relationship is, you’re not 100% against them being tested.
Which isn’t to say you may not like or be invested in Sage, Diego, or their relationship. It being imperfect as it is, it feels like the realist relationship you’ve likely seen on screen in a long time. It’s functional more than romantic, but you can see both are trying to navigate the transition they are going through the best they can. It’s just, with there being such a great imbalance now, having Will walk around in tight shorts, blowing Cin’s back out, or Cin walking around in a towel, or in the skimpiest bikini imaginable, and teasing in ways where it seems something could happen?
All I’m saying is, who does what, and to whom, becomes something for a good part of the movie you want to see play out.
On The Fence
The Frustrating Moments When The Leads Don’t Finish Off The Villain [74/100]
But, eventually, Bone Lake shifts back to being a horror movie about serial killers, and when it does, unfortunately, it falls into the same nonsense you usually see. Which one in particular? The heroes have the chance to finish off the villain, after they knock them down, trap them, or what have you, but instead of killing them or making they no longer a threat, they just run.
It’s frustrating, annoying, and considering the build of the film and how it presents something which can be seen as fresh, then taking a well-trodden road becomes such a disappointment.
Overall
Our Rating (82/100): Positive (Worth Seeing)
Bone Lake isn’t going to be a classic, but to start off 2025’s spooky season, it makes for the perfect warm-up for what is to come.
