Alex was a creation of Abraham’s mind to help him deal with the abusive nature of his father and his mother being unable to protect him, or deal with the situation herself. However, in time, rather than be an imaginary friend, who helps Abraham calm down, Alex evolves to taking him over at times (think Split, without changing the way Abraham talks and dresses). Leading him to realize Alex is interfering with his life, like having a relationship with Anchi, so he goes to a psychotherapist to help him deal with Alex.

With him doing that, Alex’s world begins to be torn away from Abraham, thus her mom disappears, her dog, for those are Abraham’s mom and dog. Alex has nothing. So it comes to a point she begins to take over when she needs to assert how useful she can be, or to hurt people who threaten her existence. But, with Abraham threatening his life if she doesn’t stop, if she doesn’t leave, she gives in for her only goal was to protect Abraham and with realizing she is hurting him, she decides to go.

Though, in the credits, we see Alex finds someone new to attach to so while gone from Abraham’s life, she isn’t gone forever.
