  •  The show takes place in Miami-Dade County.

  • Galvin Magnet School: The school David, Marissa, and Serena go to, and Dr. Woods-Trap works at, which began as an all-Black school in 1939 for the local Black farmers.
  • Hurston Prep School: A renowned local prep school David has an interest in that is all boys and a sleepaway school.

First Noted In: Season 1, Episode 1 “David’s Sky” [Series Premiere]

David is an 8th grader at Galvin Magnet school, with aspirations to go to Hurston Prep high school next year. However, there are some complications which may prevent him from achieving that goal. First, his mother Gloria is a single parent, a recovering addict, and works multiple shifts so she is either not at home or sleeping. Second, because of his mom’s schedule, David has to step up when it comes to getting his brother ready for school, getting him to school, and also keeping him out of trouble. Add in him trying to get to school on time, deal with being one of the few Black kids, and his magnet classes being challenging, never mind him growing up in the hood with his associate Raynon trying to recruit him and, needless to say, he has a lot going on.

Character Introduction

First Noted In: Season 1, Episode 1 “David’s Sky” [Series Premiere]

JG is David’s younger brother who is in elementary school and seems ripe for being recruited into the gang that has taken over the complex JG and David live in. Especially since he has shown himself to be a good fighter, is willing to do the work, and Raynon is a bit jealous of David for having a little brother – someone to protect.

Seren is David’s friend and is a bi-racial young man with a white mom and assumingly a Black dad. One of his aspirations is to be a singer and, from what we’re told and seen, he is being raised in a well-off family. Unfortunately, this comes at a cost since his step-dad is physically and sexually abusing him.

  • Enjoys singing.

Character Introduction

First Noted In: Season 1, Episode 1 “David’s Sky” [Series Premiere]

Formerly, Sky was the head of the Ville’s gang, or at least a well-respected member of the complex. However, after his death, he now just haunts David and acts as a ghostly motivator.

Additional Information About Sky

  • Real name is Lamar or Scott (Angie calls him Scott but Lamar is the name David knows)
  • Sky was shot in the back of the head after being accused of being a snitch – per Desmond. However, the truth might be that, after disciplining Raynan, for trashing his car, Teo put a hit on him.
  • Wanted to be a singer.

A teacher at Galvin Magnet school who teaches either History or English and is one of David’s leading advocates. We’re also told she taught Sky back when he was in school.

Gloria is David and JG’s mother who makes it sound like she was a former addict but has been recovering and been a more consistent provider than she was in the past.

  • Worked at a truck-stop for a year and a month.
  • Loves Stephen King novels
  • One of her first friends were Elijah, hence why David’s middle name is Elijah.
  • Had a terrible childhood thanks to her mother and what she enabled.

We honestly don’t learn anything about Marissa beyond knowing she is one of David’s classmates at the Magnet school in the episode she is introduced.

At the complex, Raynan has seem to inherit Sky’s place as leader and this has saved David’s behind many times. Especially since members of Raynan’s gang aren’t fond of David and one, in particular, is ready and willing to pop him in the mouth one time.

An Overtown OG who Raynan references as Reverand Saul. It isn’t 100% clear what allows Saul to maintain a rather lavish lifestyle, filled with young girls, and allowing him to buy his grandson, JG, fancy sneakers, but anything is possible.

Sky’s brother in law who is a major drug supplier. Also, he is someone who attempts to recruit Dave and is someone Raynan is trying to earn the trust of so he can take things to the next level.

  • Growing up, Teo was the darkest member of his family and was constantly abused because of it. Making it so, when Raynan was born, he sword no one would touch him so that he wouldn’t suffer the trauma he did.

A notable figure in the Vil, though not for drug distribution or anything like that. Mx. Elijah watches out for people in the community, both the LGBTQIA+ and those they are asked to look after. Which includes Dave and JG.

Tare is one of the girls of the Vil and helps make it clear there are some with an interest in David, or Day, as she calls him. But, for her specifically, what she is drawn to is how cool his mom is, the fact he saved her from harassment from the other boys, and he usually is nice awkward, but nice.

One of Dr. Woods-Trap’s former students who is now a congressman. However, she notes massive disappointment in him since he may walk the walk, but he doesn’t talk the talk. In fact, he exploits his former state of poverty, which is detestable to her, and he seems to only care about community when it is election time.

Gloria’s mother is a Christian, who raised her conservatively, and with a short leash, but wasn’t the best mother. She allowed Gloria to be raped by her father, Gloria’s dad, multiple times, advocated for the abortion of David, notes she wishes she had an abortion, and when Gloria was pregnant, believes Gloria should have found a way to marry Darius.

So, to put it simply, she is trash.
