Recap

Hello Lisa: Lisa, Misty

While Misty and Walter are beefing, they are still drawn to each other and know that, with their brand of eccentricities, they might be in a rough patch, but being citizen detectives can bring them together. Hence, Walter gifts Misty Lottie’s trash from a limo. Of the items, a restaurant without a Michelin star sticks out, and when Misty investigates, she learns that the restaurant is where Lisa works.

Now, if you don’t remember, Lisa was paired with Natalie at Lottie’s cult, and Lisa lost a lot due to her association with Lottie. With that in mind, she seems like a suspect, and add in that Lottie gave Lisa the money she withdrew, which Misty found out about in the last episode, and it just makes her all the more suspicious. But, ultimately, Lisa says she didn’t do it and points Misty to Taissa.

What’s On The Tape/I Just Wanna Be Close To You: Callie, Shauna, Van, Taissa

Callie is coming of age, and as much as she wants to be nosy and see beyond the veil her mother is struggling to keep up, she also just wants to help. The problem is that Shauna isn’t ready to let go of this image she has made, and Callie’s attempt to secretly record her isn’t taken well.

But when your parents have you leave the house, go to a motel, and act all weird, wouldn’t you be as curious as Callie? Never mind; her “friends,” if you want to call them that, only gather together when someone dies or things are getting bad, if they aren’t already catastrophic.

This leads to the question of: What’s On The Tape? Well, similar to Taissa and the no-eyed man, nothing notable. It might be evidence of what happened back in the wilderness, but it isn’t played long enough, and nothing of note is said to make it shocking or jaw-dropping—despite how Taissa, Van, and Shauna react.

All You Had To Do Is Wait One More Day: Natalie, Ben, Lottie, Akilah, Shauna

However, in the past, we get a sense of what happened that may have led to the recording threatening Shauna. Ben, for days, if not weeks, finds himself just wanting to die. His Achilles tendon has been cut, he knows he is hated by most of the camp, winter is coming soon, and he is a grown man in a small tent, unable to do much. With this in mind, he asks Natalie, repeatedly, to kill him, only to be refused.

Now, does she think about it? Yes – she even, ultimately, does kill Ben. But, in the process of trying to deal with the idea of murdering someone, Akilah is looking for answers from her visions. Nothing comes beyond visions of everyone in school, which doesn’t illicit hope as much as groans.

But then Natalie kills Ben. Being that the Wilderness didn’t order this, something feels off to Lottie, but, as is customary, to honor his death, Ben is chopped up and eaten, with his necklace seemingly being taken (the one Lottie gifted Callie). This couldn’t have worse timing for on the day that everyone is eating Ben, two hikers discover the Yellowjackets camp and now we’re left to wonder: Did they get rescued by these two, or because someone was looking for the two hikers after the Yellowjackets killed them, to hide what they stumbled upon?

Predictions

  1. What if the thing that haunts everyone and they fear getting out is less so eating Jackie and Javi, and more so it is the murder of the two people who were likely killed because they saw everyone eating Ben? Never mind, the cover up for what they did to those people when they were rescued?
  2. Did Dark Taissa kill Lottie? Could “The Wilderness” have a hold on Taissa and has been using her for who knows how long to make things happen?

Review

Trajectory (79/100): Decline

Highlights

Ben’s Death Felt Emotional [82/100]

I’m still very much in the camp that Lottie’s death was a means to drum up some drama and interest rather than something needed for the story. However, Ben’s death feels impactful, likely because it wasn’t a shock and had a good buildup to it. He was a protector of these girls when he was capable, and when he wasn’t, he realized he had shielded potential monsters capable of more when they got the opportunity.

Add in, with cutting his Achilles tendon and how dark some of them were getting, you could tell they were getting worse, and even those like Natalie, who were still level-headed, had to give into the majority. With that, Ben may have physically died in this episode, but his hope died long before, and the girls he knew and loved, they’ve been dead and buried with Javi and Travis’ father for who knows how long at this point.

So, in many ways, Ben’s death felt earned for he has had enough struggle and drama, and now he has gotten peace.

On The Fence

The Story Moving Forward [77/100]

Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) saying someone is trying to kill them
Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) in Yellowjackets: Season 3 Episode 6, directed by Pete Chatman (Showtime)

I’m forever going to see the past as having more potential than the present, and with outsiders, potential rescuers, discovering the girls, again, it just seems like the modern-day actors are but a Trojan Horse for their younger counterparts. What I mean by that is they have the famous, thoroughly established names in present day to launch/introduce Jasmin Savoy Brown and Sophie Thatcher, and this isn’t to downplay Sophie Nélisse or Ella Purnell having notable roles before this show. Still, I’d submit the investment has, is, and may always be in the next generation of actors more than the present day.

For at this point, we can only hope in the present with Taissa being a suspect for killing Lottie, this goes better than the last two mysteries of the present. With the no-eyed man being a bust and the tape not having much either, Shauna is carrying the present, with Misty now and again helping, and while it has been disappointing for a long time, I can foresee it becoming a problem if the reveal of who killed Lottie doesn’t pack a punch. Never mind if the reveal of who is stalking/trying to harm Shauna doesn’t only lead to Hillary Swank popping up, but her character being more than another familiar actress whose known potential gets wasted.
