Episode 8 “A Bet Is A Bet” Recap (With Spoilers)

Familiar Faces: Zuri, Carolyn, Grandma Renee, Ezekiel, Kenya, Papa, Darnell, Damien, Riley

Damien’s gambling problem has come to a point where Darnell wants him to go to a support group, and he makes sure he goes. He doesn’t sit in the room with him, which he probably should have, but Damien does attend. However, his focus is more on flirting with a girl named Zuri, whom he hooks up with, and maybe gets the number of.

As for Darnell? He goes to a grieving partners group, hosted by Riley, where he gets mistaken for a vulture looking to prey on women. He’s not; he is just looking for support, and in a moment of vulnerability, he reveals what’s going on with Jada to Damien because he’s struggling and isn’t ready to have Emmett and Kiesha know yet.

But, while there is a dark cloud over Darnell’s family, Ezekiel’s gets slightly brighter with Kenya returning home. In addition to this, it seems she might be wanting or willing to rekindle things with Papa, and it should be noted that there are no talks of Zay. The only thing we see is Papa meeting Kenya’s mom, Carolyn, and grandmother, Grandma Renee, and see them, over dinner, chew out Ezekiel for dating a white woman.

In his defense, however, it seems that in pursuit of money, Carolyn cheated on him, which may have triggered the series of unfortunate events in his personal life. Thus leading to him wanting to try something new or different.

Developing Relationships: Emmett, Victor, Tiff, Alicia, Toussaint, Nuck

As Victor and Tiff grow closer, with Alicia watching on, so do Detective Toussaint and Nuck. For Tiff and Victor, a hangout at BJ The Chicago Kid’s concert leads to them getting close enough for Victor to make a move, and even kiss Tiff in Alicia’s home. This triggers Victor feeling like he should tell Emmett, who gives his blessing.

Now, how will Nuck feel about that? That is for another episode. His focus in this one is on forming an alliance with Detective Toussaint, for while he has no desire to be a snitch, he is still learning how to be a major boss on the streets. So while a professional relationship with a cop may feel dirty, Nuck has a son to think about, and with both him and Toussaint seeing Reg as a problem, the enemy of my enemy become friends.

Yet Another Wake Up Call: Emmett, Reg, Hannibal, Damien, Professor Gardner, Bakari, Dom, Jamal, Jada

While Damien has been forced to go to a gamblers’ support group, he can’t help himself. If not sports betting or cards, he finds himself betting Reg that he can name off stats, and for losing a bet, he is in the hole for $5,000. Now, why did he bet so much? Cause he is an idiot. One that has to go to Dom, Jada, knowing her situation, and even Bakari for money – but he only gets to $4,000, and suffers an ass whipping Hannibal had to stop, for it was going too far.

Emmett, upon hearing about this, and seeing his brother, rushes to Reg’s place, whips his ass, and Reg, to defend himself, shoots Emmett in the chest, specifically the right side, so not in the heart – he may live.

On a lighter note, Professor Gardner is warned that Bakari’s grades and lack of progress on his book may threaten his ability to stay at the university, and Jamal, having had a near-death experience, speaks on having kids. Unbeknownst to him, until the conversation is finally had, Dom has no desire for kids, which could make this marriage short and sweet.

Review and Commentary

Highlights

Getting More of Kenya (And Maybe Another Round of Her And Papa Together) [87/100]

Of the characters who have left, either temporarily or permanently, this season, Kenya was one of the few I actually missed, for there was so much potential left there. Thankfully, it seems she has returned, maybe to bolster Papa’s storyline a bit.

Which, yes, is unfortunate, but considering how Carolyn is, how Phyllicia Rashad gives us the type of character who we love to see her play, cutting, holding people accountable, yet loving all at the same time, it almost pushes the feeling that Papa stepping into the spotlight again has to happen. Too many great things, from storylines to performances, could be ahead, and they need to stop dropping the ball with this OG character.

Toussaint and Nuck Joining Forces [83/100]

In some ways, you could say Nuck hasn’t gotten to live up to his potential so far. The foundation has been laid, but outside of killing people who step out of line, they have taken him being calm, cool and collected to a degree that has made him an afterthought, if not the worst kind of boring.

However, pairing him with Toussaint, a likable but inconsistent character since being introduced early on in the series, could be a wonderful pairing. For Nuck, it is part of a learning lesson on what it takes to have longevity, and for Toussaint, it gives her a notable character to partner with, and helps ease the police really becoming a presence on The Chi again, presumably in a capacity where they won’t suddenly disappear.

On The Fence

Tiff and Victor [76/100]

With Tiff and Victor not having much going on, the storyline feels more like a consolidation of characters they have no plans to write off than a romance to truly get behind.

Damien’s Gambling Storyline And Its Repercussions [74/100]

To be honest, Karrueche showing up and Emmett getting shot is what is keeps Damien’s storyline on life support. The investment in him is pretty much depleted and while not an Emmett stan, at all, him getting Emmett shot I feel like should be part of the beginning of the end for Damien. I can’t imagine Kiesha allowing the kid who got her man, the father of her kid, shot, allowing him in her home. Never mind, Damien borrowing money from Jada likely will lead him to get cut off from Darnell, too.

So, while it might be a long goodbye, and I wish they really tapped into his intelligence to get him into the type of trouble which could have been far more intriguing, I won’t be sad to ultimately see him go.

Jada’s Storyline [77/100]

I recognize the pain and grief in both Jada and Darnell. The problem is, there is too much going on for it to be fully felt before they switch to another story. If the show revolved around Emmett and his family, not the city of Chicago, this would likely have more impact. And it is a shame too, for this might be the most I have taken note of Jada in a long time, and it seems like she may get her moment in the spotlight, but the bulb won’t be as bright as it should be.

Bakari’s Academic Problems [73/100]

To be honest, I’m wondering what happened to Bakari. From being under Alicia, Professor Gardner and his wife, his book being potentially optioned, Reg having him on his radar, and his sister leaving for New York, it isn’t like he doesn’t have stuff going on. But, it seems rather than moving and hustling, he is usually playing a small role in other people’s storylines.

Mind you, not even the main storylines, but a supporting one, like Damien’s, in this episode.

Jamal and Dom [70/100]

I would have been fine with Jamal dying, and I am still in that boat. He and Dom, throw in Lynae if you want, are the type of storylines that take away from those that could be impactful on The Chi, and this man talking about how he and Dom never talked about kids before marriage? Knowing part of the reason they wanted to get married was to have sex – no matter what either say?

Surely they can still be written off, right?

Overall

Our Overall Rating [77/100]

As always with The Chi, when it is good, it is good, and where it could be better, it seems the problem is not giving enough time to a moment or a scene to allow it to permeate. For with so many characters to check in on, or develop, The Chi will always be working against itself, no matter who it casts or how significant a role, or storyline, they get.
