Recap
No matter who you name, from Daniel to Lewis, Autumn to Naima, everyone can sense something is off about Jax. Her employees are trauma-bonding over working for her, with Daniel even checking Jax when she speaks to him in a manner that makes him feel disrespected. Naima finds one of her pill stashes and wonders if she should tell Lewis, and Lewis? While he wants to believe Jax isn’t popping pills, because of the way she is acting, he figures that if she isn’t popping pills, she must be having an affair, because something is off.
The truth? Jax is consistently high, and it is blurring her judgement when alone with Lewis and in the courtroom. Case in point: when cross-examining Brooke, Regina is stunned. There are many times she could have called for an objection, but to see someone like Jax berate someone and lose the jury while trying to impress the court of public opinion? It’s a sight to see, and she was clearly baffled. Plus, with Devonte, who had a deal on the table, suddenly going mute about what happened, it’s clear something was going down — and she was right.
Eric may not be a killer, but he does throw his money, and the power it buys, around. He bought Devonte’s silence, and it seems his own brother, five years his junior, is tired of his ways and ready to turn on him. Tyger seems to be in love with Brooke, and it’s hard to say whether she is using him or actually has feelings for him. What is known, however, is that Brooke feels she lost in court, and it isn’t going her way. So while Jax might be moving dangerously, Brooke hopes there’s still a way to win this, and she looks to Tyger for an answer.
But with Autumn staging an intervention, Brooke may not have much time before Jax might be back to her senses and can really approach this case full force, with her wits intact.

Highlights
Jax Burning Out Halfway Through The Season Than Towards The End [82/100]
Reasonable Doubt is only 10 episodes this season, and we likely won’t see it again for a year or more. With that in mind, as much as it matters that Jax understands her father’s struggle, reveals who she really is to her peers, and we see her fall from grace, there isn’t much time to get through all of that and the assumed recovery. Yes, there can be time jumps, but they have to be used sparingly, given how the show is set up. You can’t jump through weeks, months, if not years, as if Jax doesn’t live a lifestyle that requires a constant flow of money, and her marriage isn’t always one argument away from being rocky.
So, with that in mind, I appreciated Jax peaking within two episodes and then getting hit with an intervention. Now, how long will it take her to apologize and get her life back together? That’s hard to say. They could easily extend that into the next season and leave us with a cliffhanger: Lewis asks to be separated as he pursues a job elsewhere in California. Never mind, as noted below, eventually Monica’s case has to come back to the forefront, and I can’t imagine them holding off on that till season 5.

Which makes me hope episode 7 handles Jax’s intervention, her admitting she has a problem, and working through it, and somehow they can fit Monica in the last two to three episodes, with something satisfying. Granted, you know they have to leave us wondering what happens next, but I’d rather Lewis leave Jax than have them try to outdo themselves.
On The Fence
Should We Be Thinking About Monica’s Case? [73/100]
I’m still stuck on how quickly Eric’s case went to trial, even though Monica was arrested before Eric, and her case was far easier to convict. Jax was shot, and there are witnesses. Even if she doesn’t want to testify, those facts should make it hard for Monica to win, despite having the best lawyer money can buy.
But that’s part of what has me worried about how long we’re focusing on Eric and Jax’s drug addiction. I can’t imagine them rushing through Monica’s trial at this point, given her impact and the actresses involved. Giving her two or three episodes and then writing her off seems like a waste of potential, but carrying this storyline into another season also feels like a waste.
Yes, they could have Monica’s wish for Jax to lose everything little by little happen, but why? To humble her? The last thing this show needs is Jax humbled when the best thing about her is that she knows she is the best, and when she thinks that could be threatened, she will play dirty if necessary. It’s the kind of role you rarely get to see Black women play.
So I’m interested to see how they’re going to make it on par with, or even surpass, Eric’s storyline, since they haven’t mentioned Monica’s case since Regina and Mike switched trials, if not make it something noteworthy like past season cases. Just with Jax not working for the defense.
Brooke and Tyger Plotting Behind Eric’s Back [72/100]
To be honest, I don’t even know if we researched who plays Tyger since he didn’t feel like a notable character. Could it be because Tank has played Eric so big? Yes. Could it be because Brooke isn’t really that engaging and her potential death didn’t feel like a big deal? Also, yes.

However, I think the big issue here is that they didn’t make the reveal that they’re together feel notable. But as we said before, Eric’s story and universe aren’t compelling. His big personality is compensating a lot for his lackluster case and situation. Add on him bringing out Jax’s hood side and fueling her drug addiction? He earns his place more through dramatic performance than by delivering a quality story.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [75/100]
I think this season took on too much. Between Monica’s case, Eric’s big personality compensating for a case that pales in comparison to past seasons, and then Jax becoming addicted to pain pills? It’s too much, and with ten episodes and no guarantees for another season, it is starting to feel like it’s about short-term pops or shock rather than long-term storytelling.
