Reasonable Doubt: Season 4 Episode 4 – But What If The Roles Were Reversed?

Jax continues to push herself to reestablish a sense of normalcy. But by ignoring her new normal, she is edging toward the life she has long feared.

Recap

With no longer being held captive, Brooke goes on the offensive and paints the idea that Eric tried to kill her, and due to Eric’s reputation, she is easily believed. Of course, circumstantial evidence supports this, but it’s hard to tell whether Eric is innocent, Brooke set him up, or Eric’s brother is involved. The only thing we know for sure is, in a shocking twist, Mike is taking over Monica’s case, and Regina? She is now going head-to-head with Jax.

Her best offer, after Corey engages with her: 15 years, and Eric must do 90% of his sentence. Eric isn’t for this, since he is a 50-year-old man, and that means, if he got out, it would be just in time to see if Social Security still exists. So, he pushes Jax to go to trial, taking advantage of her ambition and his position as her high-profile client that could make or break the firm.

Unfortunately, going to trial means sacrifice for many. But while Jax has Lewis’ support, when it comes ot Spenser, who needs attention, Regina, when it comes to her mother, Dorothy, doesn’t have the same. Her sister Tatiana isn’t a reliable caretaker. It isn’t made 100% clear what happened, but it seems Tatiana and Regina did end up in foster care, and Tatiana has never moved past that. Though, in her defense, Dorothy doesn’t seem remorseful and is quite antagonistic towards Tatiana.

But it isn’t just Tatiana who is asked to take on a burden because of this trial; Krystal is too. Jax needs her to work more, longer, and it isn’t until Krystal is home with her wife, Angela, that she realizes what she agreed to. Brandy? With Corey asked to stay in LA, he had to convince her and work things out so she could practice in the State of California.

Amongst all this, though, it should be noted that Jax going to trial may not be what she needs to get back to her old self. She is still in pain and traumatized, and it seems she may have become addicted to taking pills. I’m talking, being willing to risk Sally’s license in order to get a prescription. Luckily, however, by using Eric’s connections, she is able to get the pills she wants and is slowly creeping towards needing.

Other Noteworthy Information

  • At the Black Gaming Developers conference, Lewis is approached by two men, Austin and Webster, who own a company that is developing games for smart glasses. Their studio is out in San Francisco, and it seems Lewis is open to exploring a move from his current employer. Even though, after Autodrive 2, it seems they finally were willing to finance his dream project: Ghetto Superstar.

Highlights

Lewis’ Life Outside of Jax Getting Some Shine [82/100]

For most of the series, Lewis has barely existed outside of being Jax’s husband and father to her kids. But we have gotten glimpses of who he is outside of Jax, mainly through his work. Unfortunately, like with most characters, the storyline didn’t present itself as something highly valued, in terms of how much screen time it got. However, we saw him deal with office politics in the past enough to help you understand, when approached about jumping ship, why he would do it.

Now, do we expect there to be a lot of focus on Lewis going from an established company to a start-up? No. I do believe, though, with Jax considering Lewis’ finances as a backup, since he offered, his storyline may connect with Krystal. How? Well, like Krystal, who left Jax’s former firm to join her new one, Lewis would be leaving an established workplace for an uncertain opportunity. Currently, Lewis’ position in his company is stable; he has built a reputation from working there and, most importantly, it is a steady paycheck with insurance benefits.

By taking this risk, he could give up the stable income and benefits that might serve as a safety net for Jax and the family. He’s doing it in the hope of finding something better, especially after how he was treated at his current job, but it’s unclear whether that hope will become reality.

A Reminder That Being Morally Sound In The Courtroom Doesn’t Mean You Are On The Street [83/100]

With the way Corey and Regina were talking, with her seeing Corey as someone who likes to play the field with younger women, and him flirting with her while mentioning Brandy exists, that raised a red flag. This isn’t to say the two may sleep together, for Regina doesn’t seem like that kind of girl, but I feel like there is too much progress, too quickly, between Brandy and Corey to not believe it is possible.

After all, cheating in any drama like Reasonable Doubt isn’t only a staple, but should be expected. Especially when it comes to relationships like Corey and Brandy, which give you every reason to become invested, but also raise an eyebrow. Prime example: Corey wants to stay in LA to help with Jax’s case, right? So, using Jax’s advice on how to manipulate Brandy, a doctor in psychology with board certification, he gets his way.

You could submit, considering how he acted the night he stayed out late, had a drink with Regina, and got a little tipsy; this was him learning how to be in a relationship. But while Regina doesn’t know Corey’s dad, let’s not pretend we didn’t meet Jeremiah in season 2, and he didn’t paint the idea that the family are aces in their careers and trouble for any woman who takes an interest. So him “convincing” Brandy to stay, as he did, should be seen as an expansion of what Regina told Krystal about the suit a lawyer wears.

Because, with the way things are looking, while Eric may get Corey at his most ethical and moral, Brandy may get the short end of the stick and get a manipulative man who might be tempted to be a womanizer.

On The Fence

Regina, Tatiana and Dorothy [76/100]

While I appreciate Jax and Regina going head to head, I still feel like the Dorothy situation is a cheap storyline to create sympathy for Regina. Also, adding Tatiana didn’t help. Yes, now there is some added color to the storyline, since Tatiana has painted the picture that Dorothy wasn’t a great mother. But one of the problems I’m increasingly having with Reasonable Doubt is that I find myself comparing new storylines with old ones.

Like, while certainly not an apples-to-apples comparison, there is Lucy’s situation compared to Regina. Now, I can imagine I complained about that too, but in hindsight, the rollout of her being a victim of domestic violence, how that affected her life, and even affected her job, felt like they took not just the situation, but the character seriously.

Regina? It still feels like they aren’t giving Meagan Good room to act, convey the unknown, and lead you to wonder why she does this, acts like that, or any kind of mystery. Which feels like a disservice to her and what Regina could offer the show.

Jax Potentially Becoming An Addict [72/100]

With Jax’s upbringing, knowing of her father’s addictions, you can see why the show would want to pursue a storyline that triggered empathy. However, it is one of those storylines where it feels like there are only two options, long term. Either Jax becoming a hot mess, nearly losing it all due to her addiction, or her becoming a functioning addict, eventually shamed into getting clean.

My guess is, for the sake of drama, her becoming a hot mess, but I don’t know who would want to see that? Does she not have enough going on? I mean, she got shot in a season cliffhanger. Do we really need her becoming an addict as the next big thing? Possibly ending season 4 with an accidental overdose, her getting arrested trying to get drugs, or some other low point?

Eric v. Brooke [73/100]

I think the bravado of Eric’s personality is doing a lot of heavy lifting here to compensate for the story. Between the husband-and-wife hatred, the bad-behaving, womanizing mogul, and the sense that there is corruption on Eric and the police’s side? This is a step down from the rising quality of Jax’s main client we’ve seen since season 1.

Granted, how can you top Shanelle or Ozzie, but this feels like a drop-off. I would even say, in comparison to season 1, Eric has the personality, but season 1’s case had a more twisty story that got you invested in what happened. Which isn’t to say Brooke can’t pull something that brings interest to the story over the battle of the personalities, but too much of this fight feels like a well-trodden road, and I’m unsure how they could make things interesting.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [78/100]

There is far more good than worth criticizing with season 4 at this point. Also, you have to applaud them for changing things up and not just having Jax in and out of a courtroom for most of the season. But while there is an effort to bring change, not every modification is a hit. However, Jax continues to be a character who can hold this ship steady as it seeks to continue to be one of the most prolific shows on Hulu.
