Biting The Hand Which Fed You: Adele, Issa, Deborah, Edouard, Reem, Amal, Marina

More and more, there is a need to know what Adele’s upbringing was like and what she was thought capable of. Between Edouard’s expectations and how bold she is around Reem, to the point of ending up in her inner circle, increasingly, there is a need to wonder how she got into the situation she is in.

But what isn’t questionable is that the more opportunities Adele gets, the bigger she finds herself dreaming, and for those like Deborah, they find themselves left behind. Note, not in a simple outgrowing kind of way, but in such a way where it is a dramatic breakup. Which, sadly, is similar to what happens with Issa, as Adele’s pursuit of information on Mark and Reem, to break them up for Amal and Edouard, leads to her breaking her promise to him.

However, always the wildcard, Marina remains on the fence. Yes, Adele entered her space by becoming one of Reem’s favorites, but Marina doesn’t seem ready to turn her back on Adele like the others. She seems to get the allure, but it isn’t clear yet if she wants to be seduced or just not another victim of Adele’s ambitions.

Loyalty Requires A False Sense Of Closeness: Edouard, Adele, Reem

Reem and Edouard are more vulnerable than they like to let on. Reem, making every effort to escape her father, Najib’s, influence, thought Mark could be her source of freedom. However, Adele learned that he wanted to build her nothing more than a different cage. Thus causing a bit of a breakdown.

Edouard? Knowing Adele’s temperament and what she is capable of lets her in. Reveals Michel is not only his father but the reason for the hotel’s prison program, and he gives her the opportunity to party with him and his family. Presenting the opportunity to leave Deborah behind without even knowing what is going on in Adele’s personal life.

But, as shown multiple times, loyalty is circumstantial, and when someone’s comfort is threatened, no one might be safe.

Plan As You Might, Somethings Are Fate: Mark, Edouard, Najib, Reem, Adele, Mika

While Edouard thought he had Mark via Adele, finding out he got Reem a Russian passport, with the idea being they would settle there, this isn’t the case. From what it seems, as much as Reem thought she chose Mark, Najib played a hand in it, and while it isn’t clear what Najib’s long-term goals are, the short term is for the wedding to go as planned. Edouard is expected to be loyal to this plan and agrees, making it seem Reem has one less person in her corner.

As for Adele? It isn’t clear how things may change for her, but after driving to see Deborah in Issa’s Lamborghini, she draws Mika’s attention again, and he decides to visit The Citadel. He also tries to blackmail her to get a percentage of her money, but, unafraid, Adele calls security and gets Mika escorted. Leaving you to wonder how he’ll retaliate for the humiliation.

Review and Commentary

Highlights

Edouard Opening Up & Showing How Similar To Adele He Might Be [80/100]

While Edouard still isn’t holding up his end as the male lead, there was at least some form of an effort to make him a bit more compelling. Whether it was the reveal of who Michel was to him or showing his willingness to do more than physically screw Amal, there is something to him a bit more intriguing than what we saw before.

Not enough to fully redeem him, but just a touch to keep hope alive.

On The Fence

Wanting Adele’s Backstory [74/100]

With Adele relatively stable, it pushes the desire to look back on where she came from. Not to the point of her repeating past mistakes, but learn what led to those original mistakes in the first place. Heck, even the idea of running a food truck with Deborah. Neither of them has really hyped up their cooking, so why a food truck?

Heck, with their friendship ending, or at least taking a pause, just knowing more about the foundation of their connection would mean something. Especially when you consider that Deborah is the only one left from Adele’s past. Yet, it seems with such a need to move forward, Privileges seldom wants to look back. Thus snatching the heft from Adele’s decisions.

But, in her defense, it isn’t like Edouard’s reveal that Michel is his dad had any oomph to it. That was treated as so matter-of-fact that it utterly lacked emotional relevance.

The Trouble Mika Could Cause [72/100]

I recognize that with Adele out of jail, it means she needs something else to present a real threat to her. Yes, losing her job at The Citadel is a serious issue, especially if she hitches her wagon to Edouard, who could easily betray her. But Mika seems like a low-level thug who bullies and takes advantage of women.

Now, you could submit, Adele reading him, dismissing him, and repeatedly getting the best of him, after letting that first act of blackmail slide, strengthens her position. But, I’d counter that, like so many characters, he is so thinly written that he doesn’t appear to be more than an annoyance. The type that you don’t worry about what they may do next, but roll your eyes over seeing them, knowing they are about to overplay their hand.

What Happened To Yak? [71/100]

Adele seemed to be, not in a relationship, but at least attached to Yak in some form or fashion in episode 3. So, for things to just be cut off and him barely show up, not address the situation, or have someone else do so? It just felt off. I’d even say it reinforces the issue of the show avoiding depth, in terms of the emotion of the characters.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [74/100]

As the luster continues to peel away from Privileges, it makes the benefit of this being a non-American show heighten, as you know it at least won’t overstay its welcome.
