The Plan: Reem, Adele, Mika, Edouard, Zita, The Colonel
Reem wants out. The problem is, ex-military The Colonel is in control, and his security is presented as formidable. But, lest we forget, Adele is scrappy, and even though she has made mistakes, even ended up in prison, she has learned from her mistakes. So, the idea is made, Adele is going to set up a robbery with Zita and Mika to steal Reem’s $20 million necklace. This should be more than enough for her (Reem) to start over.
Edouard? He will resign, so this can’t come down on him, and he is going to point the finger at The Colonel and Mark, being unable to work with them, and the issues that will stem from The Citadel being associated with them. It was all set up perfectly.
The Execution: Reem, Mark, Adele, Zita, Mika, Edouard, The Colonel
And the execution went off just the same, with surprises in store. For example, Reem murders Mark. This comes as a bit of a shock, maybe more to the audience than those involved in the plan. But things don’t end there.
Mika, through Zita and Adele’s work, is framed for the murder, and this information is used to coerce him to reveal where Deborah is. Adele is winning here. And of course, The Citadel’s board, after Edouard resigned to avoid any blame for all this, rehires him, with a better contract, and fires The Colonel.
The Aftermath: Esther, Marina, Adele, Deborah, Edouard, Yak, Reem, Amal, Steve
But here is the thing about all this: Edouard may have been made aware of what was going down, but not to the extent of knowing Mark would be killed. This comes as a shock to him, and Adele follows The Citadel’s privacy policy regarding giving exacts. However, she does make it clear she expects her job back, Edouard to clear her name regarding the planted drugs, and more, as part of her completing the task without issue. Otherwise, it seems the murder weapon, which may still be in her possession, will be planted on Edouard.
With that said, Adele gets nearly everything she wants. She gets her job back, maintains her freedom, and while Deborah, after her “rescue,” tried to pull away, Adele brought her closer by getting her a job at The Citadel. Mind you, Adele, showing she is a psycho, burned Deborah’s food truck to coerce this closeness, but you’ve seen how Adele acts. She still has a close relationship with Yak despite taking his apartment.
But, as for the sisters, Reem and Amal? Well, with Reem deciding to spare their father, things don’t necessarily change for either of them. The only difference is, as part of the wedding agreement, Reem now owns The Citadel, in whole, but leaves it to Edouard and Amal? It seems her focus is going to be on the family foundation as she leaves France to head elsewhere.
Let it be clear, though, despite how well things go, there was collateral damage. Esther, despite helping Adele escape when accused of dealing drugs, ends up being fired. Mind you, her involvement was little to none of the security issues. However, the newly rehired Steve delivers this message, and of all people, Marina moves into her spot. Showing her often straddling the fence may have been a good strategy.
New Characters in Episode 6
Zita (Shirel Nataf)

- Character Summary: Met earlier in the season, Zita was formerly in the same prison as Adele, dragged into helping Lana. However, now out, she works for herself and is recruited to help Adele execute her plan in the season finale.
Review and Commentary
Highlights
Understanding Adele Learned From Her Mistake [83/100]
It isn’t clear what happened that led to Adele getting caught, convicted, and ending up in prison – we just know the charge. However, after this episode, I feel like we all can agree she likely planned and did want someone killed. It’s just that when it comes to this plan to save Reem, things went well, and previously, her plan likely fell apart.
In fact, they went overwhelmingly well since, even if Esther and Adele made peace in the end, she was an ass to her in the beginning – so consider her getting fired as revenge. Mark’s death and the Colonel being fired? Revenge. Then, having some means of control over Edouard, as she seemingly wanted all season, a means to control a man who is an asset, but clearly dangerous.
But then comes Marina and Deborah. It is worth questioning how far ahead Adele planned and what she envisioned as the end result. Did she want Deborah closer and on the same page, as the first of her borderline queer teasing relationships? Maybe? Did she want Marina to be promoted, empowered, and to maybe exploit their will or won’t they dynamic? Hard to say.
However, one thing this episode does reveal is that the main benefit of the audience not knowing what Adele is capable of is that she can shock you when something intricate goes right.
Shocking Moments [85/100]
Mark being shot in the face, Esther being fired, and Adele getting away with so much, even destroying Deborah’s food truck, was shocking to me. It shook up the show and gave it an ending that was not only unexpected but needed. For with there rarely being this sense of a true threat to Adele, at least until the last episode, her putting something in motion, which triggered who she was before prison? It finally felt like we got a sense of who she was, and it may have led to being a bit overwhelmed, but perhaps in the best way?
The Ellipsis [84/100]
HBO Max marks this as a season, not a series finale, which does leave room for a second season. As of the posting of this, there isn’t anything announced, but the episode ends in such a way as to prove there is more to explore. Whether it is a new guest, how the new dynamics of The Citadel will work, or even digging deeper into the Fethani family, and seeing how Reem and Amal will handle their dad, knowing the family money is in trouble, and he is desperate enough to do something unethical, if not illegal.
Never mind, with all the questions left unanswered from the first season, there is a lot left to chew on – and it looks delicious.
On The Fence
The Things Left Unanswered [75/100]

However, while some answers could wait, like what led up to Adele getting arrested the first time, other conversations or moments of clarity aren’t so easy to let go. What is going on with Yak is the biggest one, since, when Adele took his apartment, it became hard to say if he still worked at The Citadel, if at all, never mind where he lives now.
Then, with how things end for Amal and Reem, there isn’t much of a hint at what’s next for them. You assume Amal joins the family’s foundation, or what’s left of it, considering the family’s money troubles. But what of Reem? She just murdered a man – shot him in the face. Never mind, she and Adele pulled it off, so their relationship is forever altered, and she now gives Adele massive influence, since Reem outright owns The Citadel.
All of this and more, like how Marina feels about Esther’s dismissal and whether she lucked out or planned for this promotion, straddle the fence between things a second season could reveal or season one should have addressed before the credits rolled.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [81/100]
The season finale of Privileges is the type that reminds you why weekly releases still have a place in entertainment. It isn’t (just) because it stretches someone’s subscription over multiple months, but because some shoes can’t be quickly consumed and still be good. Privileges proves that some, if not a majority of programs, need you to have that break in between, allow a proper build-up, so that 6 days in between can lull the middling parts and you just remember what is truly good and perhaps what is truly not working.
That way, when the season finale hits, it truly feels like a culmination and not just another episode, which may kick things up a notch. For what Privileges does in its finale is shocking, creates an exclamation point, and honestly has you unconsciously forget some of the more on the fence bits of the show, and focus on the best it has to offer. It reminds you why the premise was so good and brings back that interest and excitement the season premiere had.
