Alice makes a lot of advancements this episode in the case, which may have ruffled some feathers, just as much as her showing up to work with a black eye after a recent sexcapade. Focusing on her professional career first, with a picture of Jay Easton having Isabel in his lap, and hinting this to the Easton family, Emma arrives for a conversation with the family lawyer, Hal, that unfortunately goes nowhere.

But Alice does gain traction when she goes to the Bright Fields Group Home, where Miss Jolie Nixon, caretaker for 25 years, not only has information on Isabel but Catherine too! In fact, she connects a lot of dots for Alice from Isabel dating Adrien, Jolie teaching the girls things from back when she was a pediatric nurse, and that Isabel ran away when she was 14 and pregnant.

All of this is great, but one major problem is that Isabel was a cold case that Nora signed off on. So as much as she has been encouraging Alice to do the “Brickwork” to get the job done, now Nora realizes she is going to be exposed if Alice goes further. Luckily for her, Marshall reveals what happened the day before to Nora, and all it takes is that one conversation and her burgeoning worries to get Alice taken off the case for a bit and forced to hand over her documents to Frank.

As for what Catherine is doing? Well, she uses Hal’s son, Blanchard, to get to him, drugs him, and brings him back to Alden’s place. But before she can plan out how she is going to get Hal to answer some questions, maybe confess, and kill him, Alden confesses his love for Catherine. Her reaction? She seems happy. But she is also used to making people feel how she thinks they want or need to, so whether or not she genuinely likes him enough to be his girlfriend is anyone’s guess.

Which leaves one last thing: Danny and Alice’s relationship. Danny is struggling real hard to know what is going on with Alice, and there is a real push-and-pull dynamic between them. He wants to know, but only certain details. She wants him to be closer, but also struggles to be vulnerable. This makes him talking about his son, Liam, who has special needs, being in a home hard. Just as much as him maybe having feelings for her.

Other Noteworthy Information

  • Relating to the Girls: Alice says, at 14, she was in a group home after running away and her father not letting her come back home
  • Catherine Grace’s Background: She was born 2/4/1997 in Hoosick, NY, and was abandoned by her mom within the first years of her life. Her dad, who was taking care of her, died of an overdose.
  • Greek Mythology: Nora is heavily into Greek Mythology

Review and Commentary

Highlights

Nora’s Growing Complexity [85/100]

The push and pull with Nora, especially regarding her relationship with Alice, is that you can see a genuine friendship is possible and the ideal type of mentorship. However, Nora is messed up in ways that I think she is ashamed of. If not, she is open only to people who she thinks can’t hurt her.

Because when it comes to Alice, I don’t think she cares if Alice knows or believes she is a drunk. However, while Nora may not value how she is seen personally, professionally? She doesn’t want to lose the respect, the command, the affluence, if not influence, her position holds. It’s probably the one concrete thing she has.

So with Alice clearly a wonderful detective, I think there is a fear that what Nora has learned to accept- the failings that she believed she couldn’t control- Alice is going to learn that is a lie. On top of that, she will not only learn that it is a lie, but Nora didn’t go as far as she could. Leading her to embarrass Nora on the record, and Nora forced to come to terms that, as good of an investigator as she is, she is, or has become, as bad as the supervisors who put politics and promotions before justice.

Alden and Catherine [83/100]

I genuinely wonder if Alden is just a mark or trick, or does Catherine have real feelings for him? Because I think Catherine is good at pretending, especially if it means survival or executing a plan. But with her mentioning feeling her fingertips, there is this push to wonder if she is genuinely happy and how long that joy can last.

After all, that picture gave Alice and the rest the evidence they needed to eventually catch up with Catherine. So I don’t know if this is her means of having something nice before it is all over, and she likely kills herself with a deadly dose of fentanyl, or this is just about securing her home, where she keeps her things, and the means she gets a steady check from?

Marshall Being A Pain In The Behind [82/100]

Marshall ruining a star-making, promotion-causing case for Alice is messed up, but it also gives us someone to hate firmly. Yes, with him being Alice’s past abuser, and seeing him more and more each episode, he was already an easy target. However, we didn’t see him do anything to Alice, so we hated him because of what we heard. Now, with him giving ammunition to Nora, who was in need of it, we have something we saw him do.

Granted, we didn’t see him tell Nora about the night before, but those details could only come from him, right? About “showing up to his place unannounced” and rearranging the facts to coerce her to recant what she said previously. All of this makes him the perfect villain, and we can only hope someone punches him in the face.

On The Fence

Danny Having Romantic Feelings For Alice [74/100]

I don’t support a Danny and Alice relationship. Co-workers, friends, Danny being the brother Alice always needed, I can get behind that. Her having a crush on him, and it being reciprocated, but them both being so traumatized by past relationships they don’t know how to convey it? I’m good.

It just seems too simple, even with the complexities of their trauma. To the point that it almost feels lazy to pair these two, rather than just leave them with this complicated friendship that has longevity but struggles when it comes to vulnerability and intimacy.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [81/100]

While Catherine’s storyline and the case she is in are flourishing, there is a slight need to raise some concern regarding other things going on this episode. From Danny’s relationship with Alice, how Nora trying to protect her mistakes plays out, and the question of how the protagonists’ storylines balance being human yet good enough at their job to take down Catherine and Jay Easton.
