Plot Overview (Episodes 4 to 7)
How to process a sex doll talking to you? Cody can no longer blame old melatonin as the culprit, for days have passed since she took a handful. Also, there is no mention of changing her weed supplier. So, she goes to her therapist, who simply thinks Barabara is an imaginary friend. One that, as long as she doesn’t advocate violence, isn’t a bad thing.
But, the problem with being friends with Barbara is that she might be the worst parts of Cody mixed in with the honesty she isn’t capable of. Prime example, Cody’s Tooth Fairy stripper idea is terrible. Barbara says it, Dan knows it, and Cody ignores it since she has yet another new agent who is asking for a spec script, and this crap idea is all she has.
That is until Barbara pitches their story, Dan approves, and Cody agrees. Perhaps showing she is a people pleaser and validation is a big thing for her.

When You Get Past The Abundant Need To Validate How Feminist This Wants To Be, It’s Okay
We’re still not over the moon about Dummy, but I will say that it has settled into something to watch in your spare time. I’d even say it could be binge-worthy since it is simple, if you fall asleep or nod off it won’t feel like you missed anything major, and it is sort of mindless.
Which, I know, sounds like an underhanded compliment, but hear me out. What we get from this batch of episodes is a show that doesn’t want to be taken seriously. Can you deep dive into some subjects and make it about more than it possibly is? Yeah. You can say Cody recognizes her relationship with Dan has her revolving around him, and it is stunting her a bit. Heck, throw in Barbara being the mean girl in Cody’s head who points things out she ignores.
However, we strongly feel that while there is the opportunity to see this as more than a tame sex comedy, that wasn’t the original goal.

That Vibe This Show Good Go Places After Episode 3? It’s Gone.
Is it wrong that, after Barbara was getting dismantled, I was hoping for a dramedy? Something to counteract this self-serving, almost asinine, version of feminism Barbara speaks on which since rudimentary in a way? Granted, like with the rest of the show, you can overthink it and believe they are trying to comment on how feminism is a topic that not many understand the complexities of? Hence the confusion over what would qualify as passing if put under the Bechdel test. But those conversations, be it because of time restraints or the writing, just don’t feel as fleshed out as they need to be to take them seriously.
Overall
The end of episode 3 might have been the peak for this show, and after tumbling downhill a bit, we’ve now plateaued. Leaving us with a serviceable show, mindless entertainment, that is worth putting on your watch list, but surely isn’t must-see television.
