Episode 7 “The Lighthouse, the Song and the Girl” Recap (With Spoilers)

Hitting The Reset Button: Takahara

When the episode begins, you may think it is a recap episode as certain pivotal events are replayed, like Takahara meeting the rest of the kids on the island. However, as we get glimpses of Umi not seen in the first six episodes, it seemed this might cover who she was running around with and what she was doing. Alas, that isn’t the case, and we focus on Takahara.

The Cow & The Cat: Tsumugi, Takahara, Shizuki

The focus of this arc is Takahara’s relationship with Tsumugi, the odd blonde girl who lives in the lighthouse. Rather than just asking her what she is doing once and rarely, if ever, seeing her again, he hangs out, helps clean the beach, and has a sleepover with her. He even meets her friend, Shizuki, who, perhaps because she is notably proud of the size of her breasts, likes to make jokes and point out things that look like breasts to her.

As you can imagine, it is a bit awkward for Takahara, but he rolls with it because he is having fun.

It’s Not All Fun And Games: Tsumugi, Takahara

Similar to Kamome, while there is a high level of fun, hijinks, and certainly memories had, things get serious after a certain point. Tsumugi, living alone in the lighthouse, is portrayed as really lonely, and she asks Takahara to stay over, without Shizuki present. That wasn’t going to happen, but with summer ending soon, Tsumugi is sad because she lives far away and seemingly doesn’t see the point of a long-distance friendship, considering they’d likely never see each other again.

Takahara, who experienced some form of healing from his own issues thanks to Tsumugi getting him into water, tries to honor their friendship now by committing fully to the time they have left—minus him staying over since that could lead to a lot of questions.

New Cast and Characters

Shizuki (Sahomi Koyama)

Review and Commentary

On The Fence

Heavy On The Ecchi [73/100]

While Takahara’s storylines have always, once an episode, reminded us he is a teenage boy who mainly hangs out with girls he finds attractive, this episode got heavy into moments that could make him blush or have other reactions. From Shizuki’s build, Tsumugi when she gets wet, and a handful of other situations (no puns intended), this episode was a bit more dirty, and I would say most of it felt unnecessary.

This Feels A Bit Rushed [74/100]

I’d add that it all felt rushed. Granted, comparing it to Kamome’s story, it is hard not to feel rushed since there was a buildup to her revealing what troubles her and what awaits her off the island. With Tsumugi, it feels like a checkbox since she is next up. They have to hit these moments, and it feels like, within two or three episodes, we’ll move on.

It makes me wonder, especially since Tsumugi was a blink and you miss her character in the first six episodes, why was she featured? Between Umi, Ao, and, of course, Shiroha.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [73/100]

With being relatively good so far, I must admit the soft-reboot of Takahara’s summer isn’t necessarily living up to the previous six episodes. I don’t know if it is because the heart isn’t there, maybe because the character chosen wasn’t someone we fond ourselves invested in, but while not worried, I do wonder if we’re going to go from something heartfelt to just rushing to cover all the video game, and parts of the manga.
