Recap
Umi finally does it. She reveals, only to Takahara, that she is from the future, Takahara is her dad, and Shiroha is her mom. In addition, she notes that every activity they did was based on future Takahara talking about one magical summer he had with Shiroha, thus explaining her ability to predict the weather.
However, like her parents, with Shiroha having premonitions and Takahara being able to see Schichieichou, Umi has powers as well – she can project herself into the past. This most recent time might be different than the rest, though. Seemingly, she triggered her ability after accidentally running off a cliff, to not get caught by future Takahara, who returned to the island without her—leaving you to wonder if the Umi we see might be something similar to Kamome.
Either way, by telling Shiroha she can see the future, but omitting that she is from the future, Shiroha runs off and ends playing house. Pushing the idea her arc is likely to still play out and maybe meet the fate she originally thought it would.
Review and Commentary
On The Fence
Answers Given But Emotionally Lacking [77/100]
I’m starting to believe with Umi being around for the entire series, and the expectation it would soon be her turn, too much was built up in my head. I expected her to really wow me, throw the entire show off course since Takahara couldn’t date her, so it would mean a deeper emotional connection. That of, what she was originally introduced as, a younger cousin who doesn’t have the most ideal home life.
But, even with spoiling myself a long time ago that Takahara and Shiroha are her parents, I had hopes that things could still have been impactful. Yet, they haven’t been. The story’s progress makes logical sense, but it lacks the emotion you expect.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [77/100]
With knowing Umi so long, that familiarity seemed like it would be a bonus when her storyline came along. However, as seen multiple times with Summer Pockets, familiarity can be a bane or a boom, depending on how the character is handled. Ao benefited greatly from it, but Tsumugi floundered. It is hard to tell where Umi may land but, I don’t see her arc finishing in the top two right now.
Question(s) Left Unanswered & Predictions
- With Umi shown to be falling off a cliff, similar to how Ai did, is what we’re seeing a Kamome-type projection? Did Takahara maybe encounter a butterfly, touch it, and this is a long memory? How do you explain the time jumping?
- Is there ever going to be more information on Takahara’s family, since there is a notable amount of powers or magic they are capable of?
- Did Shiroha die during childbirth?
Video Text
- Intro Slide
- Recap: Umi, Shiroha, and Takahara continue to live out Umi’s fantasy of them being one happy family, until it becomes clear there is more to this fantasy than she lets on.
- Recap: To Shiroha and Takahara, she reveals she is aware of the future, and with Shiroha under the impression she will die soon by drowning, that makes continuing this fantasy too much for her.
- Recap: Takahara gets to dive deeper and learn the distant father Umi has spoken of is him, and Shiroha is the mother she never knew. That this all is about living out moments Takahara once told her about.
- Recap: But, as Umi reveals her ability to jump into the past, it is also worth noting how she speaks of this is the last time and how she ran off a cliff before becoming fully immersed in her father’s pivotal summer.
- Review: In writing, you can understand the emotion of Umi wanting to live out some type of connection with her mother and father, especially when both were happy.
- Review: However, be it because Umi has been around so long or just expecting more of a gut punch, I feel like things aren’t as affecting as they should be.
- Review: Granted, we spoiled ourselves long ago about who Umi is and who her parents were, but I didn’t think at the time, or now, that would lessen how this could play out.
- Review: But, considering how many good arcs we had, and one absolutely terrible one, maybe the stakes were just too high, and that is why we’re sort of “Meh” over what Umi is delivering.
- Review: Though being the third or fourth best of around five arcs isn’t the worst thing.
- Overall (77/100): While Umi’s arc is by no means bad, it isn’t necessarily as a strong point right now. It’s good enough to not be the worst, but by no means is competing to be seen as one of the best.
