And so Devilman Crybaby ends on a surprising high note. One which, strangely, may make you feel sorry for the last demon Akira faces.

The History of Demons and Satan: Ryo, Akira

As predicted, surprisingly, Ryo is Satan. A being apparently from a different plant or world who, after losing to God, found themselves coming to earth back when dinosaurs were alive. However, according to Ryo’s history of the world, dinosaurs were actually demons. Beings that survived by merging and evolving, hence their eventual state merging with humans.

Of which, seemingly may have included Ryo who, somehow, ended up forgetting he was Satan for a long time. Even after using his powers to save himself from some military which may have been controlled by Xenon’s men – who have all been punished, i.e. death – and being eventually raised by his assistant Jenny, his memories never returned. The only thing he could remember was Akira. Who, with him disagreeing with his plans for a new world, one without humans and ruled by demons, it means the former friends have become enemies.

Akira vs. Ryo: Akira, Ryo

With every Devilman on earth by his side, inspired by Miki’s social media post, Akira wages war against the demons as the demons wipe out humanity. Leading to Akira and Ryo facing off in a rather epic battle. One which requires Akira to repeatedly merge with other devilmen as limbs are cut off one after another. Leaving, seemingly, both Akira and Ryo exhausted and talking like old friends again. But, in truth, what Ryo is talking to is a corpse and no sooner than he realizes this, and embraces the one who perhaps awoken his heart, the world is stricken as it was when the dinosaurs were killed off. Thus ending the reign of the demons once more.

• For reasons unknown, now it is decided to draw a male character with a penis. While also giving Satan/ Ryo breasts. I don’t get it, but it is also not serious enough to research.

Highlights

It’s All Over – Point Black – Period.

I found the ending quite good, if not pleasant. Ryo as Satan got laid out well and made sense, his battle with Akira was entertaining, and I liked that there was a moment when you could oddly believe they were just talking after all that. It brought this weird serene feeling. This idea that after a war, there will always be peace and even the two sides who started it all could end it and talk as friends.

Yet, SURPRISE! Ryo is talking to a corpse and with his heart awakened, him realizing demons can feel something like love, he is immediately hit with loss. Thus, until the word gets destroyed, he has to deal with his own personal hell.
