Film Summary
It isn’t clear if it was one thing or a slew of things, but Allison is moving out of Gary’s swanky apartment and breaking up with him. This is a bit shocking to Robert for while he doesn’t have a strong opinion on Gary, the apartment seems a bit nicer than what he raised Allison in. But, she surely has her reasons, so he supports her after taking a hit of a joint.
Cast & Character Guide
Please Note: This is not an exhaustive list of every cast member.
Allison
Young and still figuring stuff out, Allison makes it seem the breakup is about her being on her own, taking back her identity, and figuring some things out.
Robert
Old school, and by old school, I mean still buying CDs, Robert didn’t grow up or raise his kid in a swanky place, so her leaving one is questionable. But the more he hears about Gary, the more he seems to get it.
Gary
Gary seems to be a guy who liked the power dynamics of being an older man with a younger woman.

Highlights
The Father/ Daughter Relationship
A family that smokes together maintains close relations well into adulthood, right? Well, maybe. But when it comes to Robert and Allison, you can see an openness about drugs, money, and a good amount of honesty – all signaling a healthy relationship. Which, with a lot of shorts and indies usually having the opposite at play, is a welcomed sight. Particularly the fact that, while Robert has questions, he quickly gets on the bandwagon of assuming whatever reason the relationship ended, it’s Gary’s fault.

Getting Stuck On Why Gary and Allison Were Breaking Up
Okay, anyone who calls their girlfriend, now ex, “Kid?” Yeah, that’s a red flag in our eyes. But, considering how we know Allison definitely lied about Gary maybe being as controlling, or using his influence, to have her do things like cut her hair? It’s hard to say what really happened and why she and Gary broke up. Though, to make things worse, you don’t even know why she and Gary got together and what she brought to the table beyond her youth?
Which, for us, is something we got stuck on.
Overall
Our Rating: Mixed (Divisive)
Daddy’s Girl is like dropping into the end of a movie on cable before what you wanted to watch comes on, and while you’re interested, because you feel like you missed so much, you feel lost. For as much as you do have to admire Allison and Robert’s relationship, all the questions left regarding Allison’s and Gary’s stay with you far more than Allison having a cool dad.
