A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder: Season 1
Episode Count | 6 |
Available On | Netflix |
Starring Emma Myers, of “Wednesday” fame, in this murder mystery, she takes the reins as Pippa, aka Pip, and while we weren’t necessarily fond of the lack of development of Pippa’s friends or how much Pippa gets away with, we can’t wait for the already confirmed second season.
Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines: Season 1
Episode Count | 12 |
Available On | Crunchyroll |
Young love can be a struggle to depict, as it can often be forgotten, or emotions can grab hold of memories and distort things. But with “Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines,” we get what feels like an apt depiction of what it means to be a high schooler who is a bit anxious about the idea of crushes, never mind love, especially as he watches a lot of people encounter unrequited feelings.
Industry: Season 3
Episode Count | 8 |
Available On | MAX |
Many are talking about “Industry” as a slow burner, reminiscent of the world before the streaming age when shows were allowed to find their audience and didn’t need to be a hit right out of the gate. That might be a good way to describe a show that has been good since it premiered, especially when focused on the character Harper, played by Myha’la.
She, along with the rest of the cast take on the financial world, and between the backstabbing, deaths, and consistent drama, it leaves you craving more and questioning, with this being an HBO show, where are its accolades?
Bad Monkey
Episode Count | 10 |
Available On | Apple TV+ |
While Vince Vaughn may have taken a step back compared to when he seemingly was everywhere, as shown through “Bad Monkey,” he still has it. As a fast-talking detective with a role right up his alley, we get the perfect mix of comedy, crime, and a dash of drama, and with it all taking place in Florida, you know the characters’ personalities are all noteworthy for how eccentric they are.
The Day Of The Jackal
Episode Count | 10 |
Available On | Peacock |
“The Day of The Jackal” was an unexpected addition. Peacock is probably one of the worst at advertising what’s new on their platform. On top of that, as a co-production of Sky and Peacock, this was a licensed show, so you know it was more about having a stream of content rather than presenting something to believe in.
However, this remake of the 1973 movie popped up and blew up nearly everyone’s Best of 2024 list by likely not only becoming a late edition but moving up high for those who did rankings. Eddie Redmayne, in particular, as an assassin who mainly kills high-value targets like government officials, the rich, and the powerful, joins Pamela Anderson and others in redefining what you see him capable of.
Add in he isn’t an assassin without a personal life or some level of personality, and how his missions can get your heart racing, and you get what surely could become one of Peacock’s flagship programs – something they’ve needed for quite a while.
The Penguin
Episode Count | 8 |
While its parent franchise, “The Batman,” experiences multi-year delays, “The Penguin” renewed interest because it is a crime thriller. In fact, I’d submit it pushes the need to wonder, as DC tries to break away from competing, catching up to, or imitating Marvel and the MCU, and rebuilding its own unique brand, why do they continue to try to pursue box office numbers?
Granted, the answer is money, but in terms of delivery, imagining more of the Batman franchise as a series, beyond what we saw with “Gotham” or “Pennyworth” but of the ilk of “The Penguin,” it seems like surefire hits, especially as a means to build out a universe without rushing the process.
For with what can be seen as a Penguin, or Oswald, origin story, we get something that honestly surpasses most of the output of the DC universe and many of the MCU’s recent releases to make something that reminds you of why movies like “The Dark Knight” won Oscars and that comic book movies can do more than lead to big payouts but also allow actors to shine.
