Yellowjackets: Season 3 Episode 7 – Recap/ Review

Among confirming two who don’t make it out of the wilderness, what’s on the tape is properly revealed, who the people were in the last episode, and perhaps Shauna’s stalker.

Recap

Who Were The People From The Last Episode?: Hannah, Kodiak, Edwin

To answer the question, Hannah and Edwin were researchers, mainly focusing on frogs of all things, and Kodiak was supposed to be their guide. Now, in their research, we learn it is possible the screams of the wilderness that Lottie has been listening for were frogs during mating season, and the supplies Ben found were from the previous team embedded in the forest.

Now, what about the corpse that was in the cabin, whose plane was there before and the question of the symbol in the woods? You’re asking for too many answers for a three-day montage. Especially considering we only see 3 days of Edwin, Hannah, and Kodiak in the woods. But as shown in the last episode, eventually Edwin, Hannah, and Kodiak come across the Yellowjackets, walking in on them the night Ben was being eaten, and this leads to all hell breaking loose.

Rescued, Murdered, Betrayed: Hannah, Edwin, Kodiak, Akilah, Travis, Shauna, Natalie, Van, Taissa, Melissa, Lottie

Sticking in the past, as shown, Lottie finds this all wrong. It isn’t 100% clear why, but what we do know is that, in a moment of psychosis, Lottie kills Edwin with an axe. This is followed by Kodiak shooting a crossbow into the right side of Melissa’s chest and then Hannah and Kodiak being hunted. But, it should be noted that Kodiak is chased by Akilah and Travis, who try to get Kodiak to take them to civilization, seemingly without care for the others.

As for Hannah? It is revealed to us that she is the one who recorded the tape, and she has much more than a bunch of random noises. She has Shauna’s threats, Natalie trying to talk sense into people, Van’s hopes that they will be rescued, and more. But, as for how that tape left her person and ended up with Hannah’s daughter, Alex? That isn’t revealed.

Further Accusations & Reveals: Callie, Jeff, Shauna, Taissa, Van, Misty

In modern times, Callie continues to protest being on the sidelines, and Jeff does, too, but Shauna doesn’t want to include them. In fact, she barely wants Taissa, Van, and Misty involved. One of the reasons is Misty’s investigation leading to credible evidence Shauna may have killed Lottie, thanks to a DNA match. As for Taissa and the accusation thrown at her? It was all about Taissa becoming a believer and her wanting to extend Van’s life. So, once again, it was a bit of a flop for Taissa to bear.

But, with Misty getting to hear the tape and Shauna believing she has traced Hannah’s daughter, Alex, to her home address, the surviving Yellowjackets decide to head to Richmond, Virginia. However, as Shauna finds herself accused of murder, Van spits up blood. This leads to a hospital visit, and while Taissa is with Van, Misty tries to hold Shauna accountable for being a bad friend. Not having time for this and generally not taking being wrong well, Shauna hightails it and ends up going to Virginia solo, with things ending with her at what assumingly is Alex’s house.

Hannah (Ashley Sutton)

Hannah (Ashley Sutton) in Yellowjackets: Season 3 Episode 7, directed by Jennifer Morrison (Showtime)

Hannah is a university researcher who, despite a teen pregnancy in the 90s, got to live her dreams, as niche as they were, until her untimely death.

Kodiak (Joel McHale)

Kodiak (Joel McHale) in Yellowjackets: Season 3 Episode 7, directed by Jennifer Morrison (Showtime)

Kodiak is a wilderness guide with notable survival skills but an attitude that doesn’t make him come off as the most friendly person around.

Edwin (Nelson Franklin)

Edwin (Nelson Franklin) in Yellowjackets: Season 3 Episode 7, directed by Jennifer Morrison (Showtime)

Like Hannah, Edwin studies the Arctic banshee frog as a university researcher. But unlike Hannah, he isn’t as taken with Kodiak, and in the process of questioning him, he ends up walking into his doom.

Other Noteworthy Information

  • Shauna notes Melissa and Gen died, so don’t expect them to pop up unless she is to be seen as an unreliable narrator to not only her family but also viewers.
  • It is noted in the fall of 1997 that Hannah and Edwin died, and it is also noted it has been 25 years since their death, meaning we’re only in 2022.

Question(s) Left Unanswered

  1. Did the last researchers, before Hannah and Edwin, discover all the weird things the Yellowjackets did?
  2. We can assume Melissa died due to internal bleeding after that arrow was forcibly removed, but how did Gen die? Is she pit girl?
  3. Is the only answer as to why Lottie killed Edwin because she was crazy?
  4. Considering Hillary Swank is older than most of the adult cast members, she can’t be Alex, right? Likely, Melissa died, at least Shauna says she did, so Hillary Swank still has a chance to be her, right?
    1. Going by Dexerto, Jaylee Hamidi is playing Alex.
    1. With that in mind, is it safe to assume Swank is going to play a cop? I feel like the police are long overdue to start sniffing around the Yellowjackets again.
    1. What about Hannah’s older sister or just Alex’s guardian?
  5. Will any of the other Yellowjackets from the past appear in 2022? We usually get at least one or two a season, and Mari or Akilah haven’t been confirmed as living or dead in modern times yet.
  6. Whose hand was that when Hannah was hiding, and someone’s or something’s hand appeared?

Trajectory (81/100): Plateau

Highlights

The Past Finally Benefiting The Present [84/100]

One of the things that has long been weird to me is that the past and present rarely complement each other. Yes, you can see Shauna in the past peak from the lace blinds in the present, but rarely did the storylines feel connected beyond us getting the older versions of Natalie, Shauna, Misty, and etc.

However, with the tape storyline, it finally feels like they built a bridge rather than just had us time-jumping. With Shauna noting and looking into Hannah, meeting Hannah in the past, and us seeing what ended up on the tape in real-time, we get less of a lopsided show and more of one that shortens the distance from A to Z.

Dark Taissa To The Rescue? [81/100]

Though not mentioned in the recap, after Van is spitting up blood and ends up in the hospital, she finds herself knocked out and seeing a younger version of herself and dark Taissa. Now, considering Alex is allegedly in Richmond, Virginia, it could be submitted that is quite a hop and a skip away from the Tri-State area, and her picking off Yellowjackets, knowing about the tape or not, is becoming more and more of a stretch.

But, with Dark Taissa pushing the idea all good things come with an exchange, including Van’s prolonged life, it does push you to wonder if maybe Taissa did do something. Now, I’m not much for misdirection, and Taissa saying she didn’t kill Lottie only for Dark Taissa to be revealed as the killer. Yet, I’m not against Dark Taissa, as she has the other Taissa present smoke and mirrors with credit card maxing purchases, doing things in the background to extend Van’s life – including killing people for the Wilderness.

I mean, eventually, Taissa in modern times has to do more than pay for things, right? For it seems soon, she won’t even be able to do that.

On The Fence

Hillary Swank On The Horizon [78/100]

While I am still cautiously optimistic, mainly because Hillary Swank hasn’t been part of too many productions I just thought were trash, I must admit there remains the need to question what they will do with her. Alex is out of the question, and Melissa allegedly died, so who could Swank be? She doesn’t seem like she is anything like Mari, to be revealed as a surviving member of the Yellowjackets—but it could be possible.

So, with that in mind, who is she, what is her purpose, and will she join the ranks of Yellowjackets cast members who, yay, have a steady gig but aren’t necessarily heightening the show that continues to live off its potential than what becomes canon?
