Keeping The Boss (And the Russians) Happy: Amal, Reem, Mark, Adele, Esther, Edouard, Steve
Edouard has one of the most taxing jobs at The Citadel. Yes, he may deal with fewer guests, but those whom he does deal with are also the most demanding. Hence, he needs staff like Steve, who is tasked with building a secure room almost overnight, and Esther, to handle his light work. Never mind those like Adele who, with low profiles, can be his eyes and ears on the ground.
For example, over Edouard is Amal. She, with the way Edouard acts sometimes, seems to be coerced into having sex with her, and on top of satisfying her, he has to satisfy her sister, Reem. Not in the same physical (sexual) sense, but she is the type of person who rents out an entire floor. But what makes this time different is that she has an American fiancé named Mark, whom Edouard needs Adele to watch.
Why? Well, he is too unpredictable, a wildcard, and in Edouard’s pursuit of excellence, he needs stability far more than people who want to talk to staff and potentially shake things up. But, ultimately, it seems the only thing Mark wants to do is meet with some Russians, have Steve fired, and install his own people.
What Happened To Deborah?: Mika, Deborah, Adele
Being that Deborah is not only Adele’s best friend but also like a sister, or even an adopted one, her not showing up to get Adele to work was worrisome. Luckily, she found the time to get to a phone and learned Deborah got into a car accident. Someone named Mika is helping her, but he isn’t a friend of the family.
Mika knows that Deborah’s immigration status is precarious, so he decides to exploit Adele for 1000s of dollars. Which, with her still in prison, isn’t easy for her to obtain by any means.
New Friends and Uneasy Allies: Marina, Edouard, Yak, Issa, Adele, Esther
Luckily, however, she has options. Unfortunately, one option isn’t Edouard, as he isn’t looking to give Adele an advance. Also, while Marina is friendly, she is committed to the idea of Adele paying her dues, so she isn’t helpful either. Esther? Ha! Adele doesn’t like her, assumes the feeling is mutual, and mouths off to her in ways that surely won’t make her an ally.
This leaves a new guest, named Issa, and Yak, one of Esther’s favorites, like how Michel is one of Edouard’s. Issa, however, is the real catch. He is an up-and-coming athlete who seems rather isolated, needs a friend, and at first, Adele just hangs out with him on the job and plays FIFA. However, seeing all the gifts and more he is given, she figures she can sell those items, and he wouldn’t even miss them.
Unfortunately, she is caught in the process of doing this, but Issa downplays it and makes it so, while the trust might be broken to a point, he is willing to make this relationship transactional. Note: Not in a sexual context, but with Issa seemingly staying at the hotel for a while, for the hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars worth of things he is giving Adele, he expects her to be his go-to person at the hotel. Which she is okay with.
But while Issa is cool with things being platonic, things are different for Yak. Note, for selling Issa’s things so Adele could get the money she needs, he doesn’t make the first move – she does. However, there is this push that, as he opens up about how Esther has been there for him, going through the same program Adele has, and him rebuilding his life, he doesn’t just want lustful sex, but something romantic and passionate.
This seems to throw Adele off at first, but she gets into it, and it seems they both come to an unspoken compromise in how they want this intimate moment to go.

Highlights
How They Are Developing Adele’s Relationships [83/100]
Because Adele is so limited in her day, we can’t get to know her through her hanging out in the old neighborhood, texting and calling friends, and even her hustle to be on Edouard’s good side doesn’t reveal too much. However, how she interacts with people, especially when she thinks there is an even playing field, or she is ahead, says a lot.
Take Issa. She can see that he is a privileged, young, Black man, and she took advantage of that. It shows a dark side to her that goes beyond what she is willing to do for Edouard or how she mumbles around Esther. It shows her ability and willingness to take advantage of someone vulnerable, especially if she thinks she can get away with it. Thus forcing you to deal with the fact that maybe she didn’t get charged for being at the wrong place at the wrong time, but simply getting caught doing something stupid.
Yet, even with how she treated Issa, there is her relationship with Deborah, who seems to be a good person, and then Yak. There was something in her interaction with Yak, in his apartment, that was notable, beyond the sex. It was how she reacted to him wanting their sex to be more akin to making love than wanting to get freaky.
In my mind, she seemed unfamiliar with it, but at the same time, wanting this type of sex, liking how it felt, and that smile she had pushed the idea that this was not the norm for her. Now, granted, we don’t know how old Adele is, and her past is still largely a mystery. But I think, mainly through subtle means, we’re getting a sense of who she is and are being shown that she isn’t a victim of circumstance. That attempted murder charge is likely something she may have deserved to be charged with.
On The Fence
Edouard [76/100]
The struggle I’m having with Edouard is that I want to compare it to Adele in terms of how Privileges wants to deconstruct its characters. His work as a boss doesn’t reveal much about him, and with Michel absent this episode, the one soft spot that could give us something is not there. Then, to follow that up, we have this thing with Amal. I don’t know if it is a relationship, him trying to secure or maintain his position, or what, but something seems off.
If you compare Adele’s excitement with Yak to how Edouard is with Amal, it is like he is doing the same thing the escorts he hires for guests are doing. He has to give the people what they want, get in the mood even when he is not, and the way the show handles it, we just get the awkwardness. You don’t get the sense that he is doing what he has to do because maybe he came from poverty or is perhaps conniving. It’s all very blank.
Which could very well be the point – they want to show that Edouard isn’t above letting himself be exploited, just as much as he will maintain high expectations from his staff to do what it takes. It’s all hard to say, but I’m hoping for less ambiguity. I can appreciate subtlety but only when it’s about paying attention, not pushing you to create theories to fathom something which doesn’t exist.
Overall
Our Overall Rating [79/100]
Privileges remains strong, but it is clear it is still figuring out how it wants to handle characters whose storylines aren’t overtly reliant on Adele. Especially in terms of making it clear why they are treated as separate entities, rather than supporting characters in her life.
