You Can Hurt Someone Without Laying A Hand: Howard, Mary, Eleanor

Howard removes his façade completely this episode as he sets Mary up to lose everything. With child protective services involved and removing Mary’s ability to be around her kids unsupervised, he has her where he wants her.

If she tries to push the narrative that he killed Nancy, it means the kids are going into foster care. After all, where else could they go? He has no other family; her family is a bunch of hippies on a pot farm (which, in California, you’d think wouldn’t be something the State would be against), and Eleanor? She is as much a suspect as Mary would make Howard out to be. So as much as there is this drive for justice, the risk is too great. She becomes subservient to Howard for the sake of her girls.

Were We Wrong All Along?: Robert, RL, Eleanor, Mary, Howard, Scott, Detective Ganz

But for Eleanor, she may not be willing to make Marcus collateral damage to protect her reputation, but Mary’s girls? Apparently, they can be sacrificed. So when Mary refuses to cooperate, she goes to Robert for help, and with RL having connections at the police department, Howard finds himself visited by Detective Ganz.

This, unfortunately, leads to Mary’s worst fears, as we see Mary separated from her daughters. But, to much surprise, while Howard is in custody, Scott is presented as a prime suspect as video evidence places him at the scene of Nancy’s death.

Review and Commentary

Highlights

Loving To Hate Howard and RL [81/100]

While Howard and RL are not top-tier villains by any means, they are easy to hate. RL talking about how Nancy could taint the bloodline was rich from a guy who was friendly, almost flirty, with her when she was alive. Then Howard? Him using his own children as gambling chips to control Mary was diabolical.

But I do wish it were shocking.

On The Fence

Scott As The New Prime Suspect [71/100]

If the episode count I’m seeing is right, the next episode is the finale, and throwing Scott back into the mix feels like the absolute worst way they could end the season and likely the series. Yes, he has been established through flashbacks and has been presented as a danger and potential culprit from the beginning.

However, I don’t think the work has been put into his character to truly get a sense of payoff if he did kill Nancy. Fingers have been pointed at other characters far longer, and honestly, in more compelling ways. Be it Robert in a jealous rage, Howard’s ego, Mary due to wanting to be Nancy, or Eleanor wanting what Nancy had. Scott? The man who assaulted her repeatedly as a teenager? Who she randomly reached out to?

Something about how this show is written sometimes makes me wonder if the source material is better or not.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [76/100]

Imperfect Women is looking to have an imperfect season as it reaches its conclusion without much to get excited about. Yes, it seems we will meet Eleanor’s mother in the next episode, but as has long been an issue, the mystery, what should be the core of the show? It remains the least interesting part of it.
