Episode Recap

The First Time: Dina, Sydney

So, Sydney and Stanley didn’t just kiss, but apparently, they had sex. Yeah, it went that far and honestly, Sydney isn’t into it. Stan is cool and all but, it was awkward. But, one of the pluses of revealing this to Dina is it makes her super guilty and pushes her to schedule some Sydney time.

This Power Is Never Convenient: Maggie, Richard, Liam, Sydney

But, before that glory, Maggie, in a rather rude way, pushes Sydney to take Liam home and on their way they meet Liam’s bully: Richard. Someone who pisses Sydney off to the point of wanting to use her unstable powers on him, but she doesn’t get herself riled up enough to do so. However, while in the basement, where her father killed herself, she does get angry enough to kill Liam’s hedgehog.

Just The Two Of Us: Sydney, Dina, Brad

Unfortunately for Sydney, her one on one time with Dina is at a party that Brad eventually shows up at. But, before that, the two were dancing, Sydney had one less layer of clothing than she usually had, and seemingly was having a good ole time.

Heck, considering Brad dumped Dina, for reasons not dived into, it seemed like a semi-perfect night. At least until Sydney kisses Dina and, softly, is rejected.

Should Have Said No: Sydney, Stanley

Leaving Stanley. Sydney doesn’t like him romantically but doesn’t want to be mean to him since he is nice. So, despite wanting to harshly reject him, she accepts his invitation to homecoming. Which, all things considered, even if just as friends, could be good for her. Especially after Dina’s rejection for it amplifies her powers to the point of knocking over fully grown trees.

Sidebar

1. You think Brad knows Sydney is into Dina and they argued about that? If not, maybe, Dina not being ready to have sex?

Review/ Commentary

Highlights

The Power Is Growing

Increasingly, I just want to see how destructive this power can be. She can make someone’s nose bleed, make things levitate, kill a small animal, and now blow away trees. So imagine, and I bet it is going to come soon, her hurting someone she is close to because they make her mad? My bet is on Liam or Maggie.

On The Fence

The Teen Drama Is Losing Its Luster Fast

While you have to appreciate how Sydney is written and the characters surrounding her, is it wrong to say that with Sydney revealing she is queer, Dina’s situation, and all that is going on in everyone’s life, the superpower thing is the only fresh thing about this show? This isn’t to say the writing is bad, but it clearly is using the power as a Trojan Horse, and now that we’re getting into the heart of the show, things seem a bit empty.

Which isn’t me saying it needs to up the drama but, perhaps with watching so many YA novel adaptations, and other media focused on young people, I feel that “I Am Not Okay With This” could potentially peak, story-wise, unless Sydney’s power hurts or kills someone she is close to. For, otherwise, it’ll mirror a lot of what is already out there, just with different actors.
