Episode Recap

The Abandonment: Dina, Sydney

With Dina having a boyfriend, it means the time she formerly spent with Sydney is being reallocated. Which, as you can imagine, makes Sydney feel abandoned. Heck, to keep up with Dina, she even decides to talk to a boy, or at least reciprocate conversation.

Cooler Than Your Average Joe: Sydney, Stanley

Stanley, the young man who likes to walk around barefoot, works at a bowling alley, and sells weed, he has an interest in Sydney. Why? Well, because she isn’t boring, she’s different, and he likes different. And, you know, despite thinking he is weird, with him revealing himself as someone funny, and willing to leave work to help her grocery shop, he comes off cool, even as someone Sydney could like.

The Jellyfish War: Sydney, Stanley

However, then her power flairs up, and she has a moment. One that she thought would scare off Stanley, but that just brings him closer to her. And after smoking some weed together, revealing their pimples and acne, and ending up half undressed, the two make out.

Highlights

How Weirdly Normal Stanley Comes Off, Despite How Eccentric He Is

The Venn diagram between weird to be funny, weird to seem normal, and the kind of weird that shows a writer, and the actor, haven’t experienced being weird or knowing weird people, is a complicated one. And usually just creating a character who is just plain old eccentric seems rare. Especially in this day and age where it seems like the baseline for weird is so high, you have to make characters almost outrageous.

However, Stanley doesn’t come off that way at all. Is he different? Yeah. However, he has a basic job, alongside selling a little weed, doesn’t like his dad, and is kind of “eh” about school. Now, him seeing football like a theatrical performance, similar to Hamlet, is a bit weird – but only due to his line of thinking being different. Which is likely why Sydney likes him. He is her people and gives her a sense of belonging not too many have pursued. Which makes them such a cute couple.
