Sam in GLOW

In case you were wondering who and why someone would finance Sam’s all women’s wrestling federation? Well, you get your answer.

Sebastian Howard – Producer: Sam, Sebastian

Sebastian Howard (Chris Lowell), the heir to the Howard Foods fortune, is the one supporting GLOW. Why? Because he has ideas, money, and his mom gave him a big enough allowance to do so. However, what Sam is doing, or planning to do, with his money isn’t clicking with Sebastian. He, alongside the women of GLOW, think he is doing too much. Thus resulting, in the long run, especially after a chat with Ruth, Sam humbling himself. Especially after Sebastian pledges to finance Sam’s next movie.

Commentary

That’s how I feel about Sam and Sebastian ‘Bash’ Howard. I couldn’t care less about seeing Sam’s wife, all this praise one of the girls gives his past work, or Bash thinking they were funny. He is just this weird, pervy little man. Someone not even worthy of being considered a Trojan Horse because again:

And It All Falls Down: Debbie, Ruth

Debbie in GLOW

While most of the girls are trying on outfits, being told their character are one thing and then told to play up stereotypes, Debbie is going through it. She has to try to co-parent with a man who cheated on her and told her to her face. Debbie has to see said woman her husband cheated on with every day. Much less, said woman tries to talk to her.

Making it where this wrestling thing is perhaps all she truly has. For with no friends, no other job opportunities, no men chasing after her, what else is there? A baby? It can’t even talk yet.

Commentary

I was honestly hoping to see more of Cherry and the rest of the girls this episode.

This feels like the Daffy Duck applause joke from Tea for Two. Except, Daffy Duck is now Sam, Debbie, Ruth, and Sebastian. Meanwhile, everyone else is Bugs Bunny. They come on screen, you get so excited. Everyone else, silence.

As for why? Well, it is a hard feeling to explain. Maybe it is because Brie is doing something new, not playing someone comedic, and with that, it doesn’t feel like she is playing on her strengths. As for Gilpin? While I have seen her in other things, she never seemed like an actress to take note of. She was neither horrible nor made the show work. She was just there, often playing someone annoying.

Then with Maron and Lowell, they’re men. They are men on a show which focuses on women and gives them the meaty part. So to watch Sam deal with his ex-wife and Sebastian try to prove himself to his mom, I ask “Why should I care about them?” Especially when, more and more, I feel drawn to anyone but them.
