Episode 5 “Higeneko Adventure” Recap (With Spoilers)
Doing Something Naughty: Kamome, Takahara
With Kamome sleeping over and spending a day and night with Takahara in the hot sun, there are a few awkward moments between the two where accusations are thrown about. Both accuse the other of trying to do something, and while all gestures are innocent, Takahara’s eyes do wander, especially when he sees a half-naked Kamome.
But Takahara is a gentleman, so nothing happens, and while Kamome likes spending time with him, it seems she was less trying to make a move and more feeling safe enough around him to be vulnerable.
No Secrets Between Friends: Kamome, Takahara

However, while Kamome goes deep into a rural part of the island with a boy who doesn’t remember her, and no one else is around, this doesn’t mean she initially planned to open up to him fully yet, as they seek out the pirate ship from their childhood, which Takahara doesn’t remember at all, both open up to one another.
Kamome admits to multiple surgeries, which have made that suitcase or chest she has always had a crutch that can mask her struggles. Takahara also admits that he let his teammates down while on the swim team when he blanked out or choked in the middle of a race. Now, it isn’t clear what triggered it, be it pressure or maybe a realization this isn’t what he wanted to do, but slowly but surely, he opens up, and Kamome matches the removal of boundaries and any facades.
Yet, despite the day spent together and Takahara’s memories not returning, we’re left unsure what, if anything, may come from the two spending nearly two days and one night together.

Getting Answers [83/100]
Now, were we given all the answers you could want regarding Takahara and Kamome? No. However, we did get a sense of what happened to Takahara to push the idea of why he feels broken and why Kamome always had that suitcase or trunk around. Could it be asked what she will do now, since the trunk got caught in that stream? Yes. Also, is it worth asking what Kamome’s family thought of her spending the night with a boy? Never mind, what is Takahara’s relationship with his family, specifically his parents, that led to this need to escape his life?
But, Summer Pockets has, thus far, been about honoring the baby steps and shifts a person has in their life, and considering where Takahara was and who he presented himself as, this feels major.
Wondering What’s Next [84/100]
I’m genuinely curious as to what is going to happen next. Is Takahara going to stick with Kamome, maybe create a new friend group with her, or will this be like other shows with multiple female cast members, and he refocuses on Ao or another, and builds up a friendship with them?

From what it seems, Summer Pockets isn’t like Amagami, where we’ll see what would happen if Takahara chose to spend time with a different girl, based on a similar starting point. So, I’m curious to see, as Takahara gets more accustomed to flirting, maybe finds himself tempted more and more, what he may do. I know he’ll be a gentleman, but if given the opportunity to kiss, hold hands, date, would he take it, or is this season of his life solely focused on healing and getting back to a good place, not seeking something which could distract from personal growth?
Overall
Our Overall Rating [83/100]
I genuinely don’t know why I want to see Takahara date one of these girls, but I do appreciate the balance of him healing, seemingly growing as a person, but not being a sitck in the mud about it. He is still going on adventures, having fun, getting into situations where you know he finds his hormones raging, and yet, Summer Pockets never feels like it is doing the most. It creates comedic moments without being a comedy and can get serious without being a drama. There is this tight rope walk that truly does make me think, as much as slice-of-life can push the idea of something boring, it can be quite enjoyable watching someone have a real human experience where friendship, community, and recovery can all be in one package.
