Episode 2 “The Hero’s Conditions” Recap (With Spoilers)

The Path To Prominence: Layla, Theron, Liese, Seraia, Kyle

Kyle knows that he alone can not prevent “The Great Invasion,” but is unsure who or how he can convince humanoid races to believe him. Strength-wise, he is okay, but that’s not enough, even if Liese, Theron, and Theron’s mother, Layla, take notice. In terms of money, Kyle has some level of inheritance, but not the kind he knows he needs to have influence. Then comes the topic of connections. While Liese and Layla come up with names like Randolph the Hero or Earth Mother Kairis, these people aren’t going to listen to Kyle.

So, with that in mind, Kyle figures that, rather than seek out people who have what he needs, he’ll gain it himself by becoming a hero. The idea is a tad preposterous to some, like Theron, but considering it wasn’t long ago Kyle seemed aimless and dead in the eyes, his mother appreciates this passion he has for life now. Granted, Layla stirs the pot and thinks it is a woman, with Liese assuming it isn’t her, but Kyle reassures her with a kiss.

But, despite what he wants with her, he doesn’t seem to want to include her on his journey. Theron, yes, and thanks to his mom, Layla, he gets pushed into joining Kyle, who initially says he is going to Malad, the royal capital, but he ultimately has other plans.

The Mystery Blonde: Urza, Theron, Liese, Kyle

With planning a journey comes the need for supplies, so Kyle, Liese, and Theron head to Rimarzé market, and Kyle runs into Urza, an elf. Apparently, they are rare to see, and what is even more rare is for an elf to give their name. Why? Well, it seems to allow some form of control over them.

Case in point, Kyle says URza’s real name, Eksess, and this sends her into the type of rage where he immediately needs to say her name and put her to sleep – like a spell or dealing with an AI you have command over. This leads to an awkward moment between Liese and Kyle because Urza’s reaction causes a scene. However, in Kyle’s defense, in his past life, with Liese dead or far away, he had fallen in love with Urza and learned her real name.

Note, he doesn’t tell this to anyone, but Urza is worried about this human knowing her name, and usually, this leads to elves killing those who know their name without there being trust between them. With that in mind, Kyle offers to do an Application of the Contract in order to make it so; if he reveals her secret or uses it in a negative way, he would die. Urza agrees to it, but without a full moon, the spell can’t be done. Leading you to think that maybe their meet-up wasn’t a coincidence, but all part of the plan.

The First Check Mark: Urza, Theron, Liese, Kyle, Layla

Why? Well, because Urza is an elf, they have notable magic, and Kyle wants to head to the Magic Queen of Xarles’ labyrinth for gold and also the sword he was using when facing the Demon King in his past life. Now, the treasure, gold, he mentions, not the sword, and when he sets off, alongside Theron, he now has Liese, who doesn’t trust Urza, and Urza, who doesn’t trust Kyle.

Granted, the lack of trust is warranted. Kyle tricks them into digging for the treasure instead of going to the capital city, as originally planned. But, luckily for Kyle, while his treasure map isn’t convincing, Urza giving him the co-sign, noting the map is legit, helps convince the team. Thus, they circumvented all the traps by digging around the maze, using magic to speed things up, and ultimately finding the riches required to boost their standing, as well as the sword we saw Kyle fight with in his final battle against the Demon King.

Review and Commentary

Highlights

Complicated Relationships [82/100]

While there is a taste of world-building and introducing new characters, one thing I must admit I’m surprisingly interested in is this love triangle Kyle may have on his hands. Urza is his past love, with whom he had a deeply intimate relationship, albeit perhaps via a trauma bond. Then there is Liese, who is his childhood love, the woman he, at one time, planned to return to, and who he is trying to be with in this life, to make up for what they lost in the last.

Generally, I’m not someone pro love triangles because they often are the worst kind of messy and superficial, but there might be something here. A type of complication not just for the sake of drama, but perhaps meaning. After all, Kyle is now given the opportunity of not only loving Liese to the fullest, but also Urza and having a dynamic where you are torn between the two options, rather than thinking it should be this one, that one, or often thinking the common denominator should be single, is surprisingly rare.

So here is hoping the complicated nature of Kyle’s relationships continues as he tries to navigate his relationships with these women and the direction Liese wants to take it, and where Urza may want to in the future.

On The Fence

With This Being A Redo, Feeling Like We’re Missing Details [74/100]

One of the things we’re slowly feeling worried about is that, with Kyle living his life over again, it means we’re not going to get the newness of any of his experiences. Whether it is meeting Urza, his experience with that magical sword, or even getting to know characters like Layla, because of Kyle’s mission, to a certain degree, he has no reason to go deeper and we’re going to miss out in the process.

Case in point, Kyle’s dad pops up randomly and is such a plain-looking man that it leads to questions. However, with Kyle knowing his dad, likely appreciating him more, his focus is probably not going to be on the man and us getting to know him as he does. The same goes for Layla. She may look cool, but what incentive is there for Kyle to have her be properly introduced? What reason does Theron have to give us details?

I won’t say it feels like we’re missing out in such a way that will clip New Saga at the knees, but for those like me who love world building, but really desire to feel attached to characters, realizing multiple opportunities may not come at all can be frustrating.

Overall

Our Overall Rating [78/100]

New Saga has an uneasy future ahead of it. Yes, there is a level of drama, purpose, and, of course, that sense of urgency, since “The Great Invasion” is only years away and Kyle has to figure out a way to build himself up quickly enough to either prevent it or make humanoid society strong enough to defeat it. But, I do feel, considering the lives that could be lost, the show speeding through the relationship and people in Kyle’s life does it a bit of a disservice and lessens that sense of urgency, because you aren’t fearful or worried about this person or that person.

On paper, you know that is Theron’s mom, Kyle’s mom and dad, a woman he loved in another life, but I’m worried that these will remain facts and not develop into an emotional investment to the point that, if or when Kyle fails at any point, it will have impact.
