From having personal relationships to some of the biggest names in entertainment, to making it clear she takes South Central with her wherever she goes, Tiffany Haddish is proof you don’t have to change who you are to be successful. My momma, she might be mean to me, but the only reason she’s mean to me is because she knows that I’m the better version of her.

Highlights

She Remains An Excellent Storyteller

What you have to love about Tiffany Haddish is she is passionate about anything she is talking about. She is like a little kid who experienced something for the first time, and is feeding off that attention given like the juiciest piece of candy. Which, whether talking about Beyoncé or recounting her time as someone homeless, there is this energy you can’t deny. Making it so, even though a quarter, up to half, are topics you’ve heard already, it feels new.

Acknowledging The Miami Situation

Like many, the Miami incident was something that I was waiting to hear about. Primarily her making a joke out of what could have been a devasting moment in her stand up career. Luckily though, it didn’t end it, and now it has become material. The kind which she has video and pictures to aide in the joke, and it really enhances the story and pushes you to realize, within reason, there are very few topics Haddish won’t go into, and it truly makes her feel like an open book.

On The Fence

She’s Funnier When She Doesn’t Seem To Be Trying

One of the main issues with the taping is Haddish name drops and seems so star struck that it almost makes you wonder if she might bite Kathy Griffin’s bit of being the outsider at the party. But, the bigger issue might be Haddish being the type of comedian who is funnier in conversation than when performing a monologue.

This isn’t said to downplay her sex jokes, her imitations of people like Kevin Hart, or learning why she doesn’t let men with dirty fingers touch her. It’s just, as much as she is feeding off the audience’s energy, them not really getting to engage with her, you can see how that pushes her to carry on the conversation in a way which causes stutters.

If not, like when she tries to show how she’d be as a stripper, you get the feeling that sometimes she is pushing herself to keep the energy going despite it seeming she is sputtering out.

Overall

Met Expectations

Black Mitzvah was better than expected. After She Ready, expectations were honestly low, but since most of Haddish’s jokes weren’t already heard in the talk show circuit, you got to laugh at something the first time with her.

Would Watch Again?

Nope. While Black Mitzvah has moments worthy of becoming .gifs, there aren’t stories worth revisiting. Similar to Kevin Hart, there are just key lines worth repeating, and the internet will make it so you don’t have to watch the whole thing to get the handful of moments that will live on.

Rating: Positive (Watch This)

Black Mitzvah feels like a coming of age for Haddish as she proves the hype is real and that she can be funny in movies and shows, just as much as on stage. Now, is that isn’t to imply this is a classic, by any means, but like most comedians, she crafts a handful of moments which will likely be in constant rotation. Making it so, while no one may know which of her stand up tapings it is from, she will still benefit from them staying alive.
