Storyline Recap
Spenser Got A Girlfriend – Spenser, Aisha
It’s not clear if his new interest in the arts or maybe something else triggered it, but Spenser has someone who is interested in him named Aisha. She doesn’t have the best group of friends, who are mostly White and do drugs, but she doesn’t go beyond vaping – which Spenser partakes in, also, which gets found in his bag by his parents later on.
Mr. Kevin – Kevin, Mama Lu, Lewis, Naima, Jax
Kevin, who is dating Mama Lu, decides he is ready to meet the family, and while Lewis and Jax get along with him, Naima is still strongly connected to Paul, so she gives him a bit of attitude. However, Lewis talks to her and quells that issue.
Blended Family – Jax, Lewis, Toni
In therapy, it appears things couldn’t be better on the outside, but on the inside, there remain issues. All of which can be worked through, but Toni is a special case. While the extra support for her is nice, she is still the one pregnant and has it in her mind, she didn’t ask Lewis, and certainly not Jax, to be part of the kid’s life. Hence no communication about having a home birth with Lewis and him getting so frustrated that Jax feels the need to step in and stress Toni to the point of having pain.
We’re Not So Different, You And I – Lucy, Peter, Jax
It’s a small world, after all. As Jax picks up or drops off her kids, maybe even sees Toni and handles that, she learns Lucy’s son goes to the same school as her kid. They even end up having a conversation after dropping off backed goods and bond over the challenges and expectations of being working mothers. Mind you, it isn’t all friendly as there are some jabs from Jax about Lucy’s performance in court, but they are taken in stride.
After all, Lucy has grander fights with her ex, specifically in her trying to get sole custody, but with his past charge being for gun possession and a DUI, not domestic violence, Lucy loses her case. Thus she ends up with shared custody, which will surely complicate her life during swaps.
A Twist – Jax, Shanelle, Corey, Lucy, Autumn, Sally
When it comes to Shanelle’s case, it continues to be one part explaining what happens in domestic violence cases, and informing viewers of what they can do if found in such a situation, with a bit of drama sprinkled in. For this episode, Sally takes the stand and has a notable outburst. One that, at the end of the episode, thanks to a call Shanelle makes to her, pushes the idea that the time period between JT’s murder and Shanelle calling the cops, Sally was likely involved.
But, beyond that? Jax shrugs off what happened between her and Corey and he moves on, apologizing for overstepping professional boundaries and Autumn visits Shanelle and learns of how JT tried to diminish how Shanelle felt in her friendships by making her appear less than.
Question(s) Left Unanswered
- Where was JT’s mom to counter what Sally was saying, or anyone else?
What Could Happen Next?
- It be revealed Sally killed JT, or Sally’s husband. Either way, a reveal noting Shanelle may not have killed her husband or someone tried to help her cover it up before Jax and the police were called.

Highlights
Breaking Down Abuse Rather Than Just Using It For A Storyline
When it comes to a lot of shows which depict or talk about abuse, it can seem like the focus is either on the violent depiction or the trauma post the abuse, and that’s it. At best, a show may slap a RAINN disclaimer or something similar and that’s it. “Reasonable Doubt” however has sacrificed some of the interest you could have in the trial by providing pertinent information. By mentioning a exit plan survey, putting it out there that organizations exist that help with restraining orders, or even using Lucy to show the challenges that can come with getting custody despite the abuse when there is nothing on file, multiple avenues are being used to detail what a person, any person can go through, not just someone in a position like Shanelle.
The Initial Chaos Of Blended Families
It isn’t clear if Toni will actually be able to take her and Lewis’ son to term, considering the sign she was going through pain after Jax went off on her. But, before that conversation, we saw the beginning of a series of conversations required for two families to become one. First and foremost, if you are someone’s partner not having the child, you have to be onboard and invested. Following that, there needs to be a removal of the ego and a focus put on the child, and that is where things left off.
Now, whether things will continue, and they don’t scrap Toni and the child, is hard to say. However, there is no denying that this is a storyline to watch.
Spenser Getting A Little Girlfriend
Spenser is growing on me. While Naima is stuck in being an annoying child who could be erased without any qualms, Spenser is starting to show his worth. From pushing his father to seeing how he was repeating the errors of his dad, to establishing how the children have also been a crux in Jax and Lewis’ relationship, there have been moves made to make Spenser be a valuable player.
Now with him having a storyline which deals with him liking a girl, and that girl being surrounded by bad influences, it does make you wonder if Jax’s threat to Toni about how she defends friends has nothing on how she does her family might be shown through Spenser. For whether it is a drug charge, which could trigger Jax’s memories of her father, or another issue, it would allow this build up of Spenser to eventually peak in season 3 (which hasn’t been confirmed yet).
Lucy and Jax Bonding
I feel like we got a taste of that Lucy we originally met who was a bad ass when she was talking to Jax. I mean, just how she blew smoke when that PTA-Mom type walked past erased, for a scene, how far this character has fallen and that it all has less to do with the actor and far more with how the character was written.
On The Fence
Mama Lu Is Just Around
Mama Lu has, for me, become the type of character who made their impact in one season, and is then kept around because they don’t know what to do with them in the next. Yet, because of the way the role has been built up, the character can’t just be dismissed or written off. So, at this point, it is hard to say if Mama Lu truly matters beyond being a trigger/ reminder of Jax’s past.
Now, one could submit she might be on ice until Kevin does something to Naima, or Mama Lu does something which reminds Jax of Mama Lu’s relationship with Paul. It’s hard to say and with the way this show is crafted, I’m unsure what may come next.
