The Betrayal: Alicia, Saddler, Klem, Rem
As noted, Alicia is not who she seems. She may not be a demon worshipper but she has banked on the idea of Klem ending humanity for a long time – including her. Which, after separating Klem and Rem from the others, they both find out. But, to make matters worse, Alicia brought Saddler into this and, naturally, after the embarrassment which happened last time, he is ready for revenge. Especially since Diablo isn’t around and just Rem and Klem.
Which tickles Alicia for delight for all that Klem needs to become the true demon lord is a trigger. Hence why she didn’t take her alone. However, Saddler isn’t going to do what he is famous for out in some alleyway. He has a special place for that.
Commentary
There is one episode left and I have mixed feelings. Primarily because Alicia’s reasoning for wanting the end of the human world isn’t necessarily flimsy, just not well developed. I get it is because of her trauma but one of the things I would have loved would be us getting a full grasp on what that trauma is. Part of it deals with no on supporting her, corrupt royals and their supporters, but does that seem enough to wipe out all of humanity?
Then again, from what we know, humanity may not be as large of a number as we expect. Considering how many hybrids we’ve have seen vs. undeniably, 100% humans, maybe they are in a position of power despite lacking numbers? So wiping them out might not be some Castlevania level quest but taking out Faltra then wherever the king lives?
A Promise: Klem, Saddler, Rem
The last thing Rem wants is for Klem to become the demon lord. Yet, she also doesn’t want that to happen since there is some desire to protect Klem. Maybe, as Edelgard said, she is the sort of mother to Klem and while Klem is closer to Shera than Rem, she feels that way? It isn’t 100% clear but what we do know is Rem holds enough sway that if she asks of Klem to promise her something, she tries to honor it.
This is even as Saddler attempts to cut Rem’s cat-like ears off, and even stabs her once. Which leads Klem to beg for the promise to be voided by Rem doesn’t allow that. However, when Saddler goes to attack Klem and Rem takes the hit, followed by being impaled with 4 swords, that’s it. Klem can’t hold back any longer.
Commentary
Now, I will admit to getting teary-eyed by the idea of Rem dying. I’m not sure if it will happen, since Diablo learns where Rem is and tells Shera to rush a bunch of potions her way. Something which, considering the area Saddler impaled, shouldn’t really do all that much. Especially considering healing magic doesn’t seem to be a thing.
Yet, who knows? There is a huge amount of stuff we don’t know about this universe since we barely left Faltra. Which I won’t harp on again but, it does remain incredibly frustrating. Though, I must add in that I would have liked to see Rem and Klem grow closer to make the impact of that moment on Klem’s psyche have more of an impact. But what you going to do?
The Retribution: Edelgard, Diablo, Klem, Saddler, Rem
As Rem lays dying, Klem becomes the demon lord and, in the distance, Edelgard leads a massive army, bigger than the one before, to march on Faltra. But with Klem going full demon lord, all Diablo can really focus on is her. Leaving us to wonder if, between Diablo’s powers, and Klem formerly having no interest in destroying mortals, can she be stopped?
Commentary
It’s not that I’m not excited for the finale, but it feels like we’ve barely begun and yet we’re at the end. We never left Faltra, didn’t see Shera’s home kingdom, or deal with the crown prince being assassinated, the slave collars are still there, who knows why this dude is trapped in this game, and there are so many other things. The type of things you’d think would have been quests to come about before defeating Klem.
But ecchi moments? Am I right? That’s what matters in the long run.
Sarcasm aside, after one failed attempt to march on Faltra, how did Edelgard end up leading a larger army? Never mind Eulerex, being one of the oldest and strongest, you’d think he would be the only one able to command an army that large. But again, a ball dropped since it isn’t clear how organized the Fallen are and how leaders are chosen. We just know that they are some kind of endangerment to civilization after, likely, human civilization did something to them.
Highlights
- Rem bringing us an emotional moment as she lays there, seemingly dying.
Low Points
- This is the penultimate episode of a series which doesn’t seem likely to get a season 2, yet so much hasn’t been said or developed.
