While Natalie Portman presents a stellar performance, Vox Lux as a whole suffers by feeling almost aimless – thanks to its ending.

Vox Lux Ending (Spoilers)

Celeste (Raffey Cassidy) filming a music video.
Celeste (Raffey Cassidy)

After all that happens, Celeste talking about a dream of going down an endless tunnel, the narrator noting Celeste told Eleanor she sold her soul to the devil, and so much more, the film ends with Eleanor’s comeback concert. A concert that comes after Celeste does coke with her manager, can barely function and has a mental breakdown of sorts. All because her manager provided her drugs and decided to repeatedly call her a brat.

Yet, when on stage, all that goes away. The pain from being shot and now having a piece of a bullet in her spine, the pain of having a complicated relationship with her sister and daughter, alongside other demons she is dealing with. All that goes away as we watch Celeste perform a handful of songs, most of which won’t push you to buy the soundtrack, to finish out the movie. With the only thing which may hint to something interesting happening being Celeste running out of breath sometimes.

While the performances are good, and music value is based on taste, the thing which could have made or broken the film, the ending, gave it a serious fracture. One which isn’t so terrible this should be skipped but will leave you a bit disappointed.
