World Overview

Mao is set in a mix between our world and the past, and has a bit of fantasy through the appearance of demonic entities. It features the lead character, Nanoka, who lost her parents 8 years ago, and near the site of her parents’ death, the Five Line Shopping Street, she gets transported to the past. There she encounters Mao, who is known as an Onmyoji, and between encountering him and what can be considered an Ayakashi or Koduku, it seems some family secrets may have been buried with Nanoka’s parents.

As the story expands, it introduces locations, systems, groups, and concepts that influence both the narrative and the characters’ decisions. Below is an overview of the world-building elements that shape the series.

  • Fine Line Shopping Street (1.1): A roadway filled with shuttered shops that was formerly just a shortcut for Nanoka to get to school. However, now it is the portal for her to go into the past.

  • Ayakashi (1.1): Mao believes this is what Nanoka is, which appears to be a demon in disguise or a bi-species entity
  • Katashiro (1.1): A type of charm Mao uses that allows him to stun his opponents
  • Onmyoji (1.1): What we’re told Mao is, which is someone who can do anything, from telling your fortune, treating an illness, or fighting ayakashi
  • Byouki (1.1): A form of Kodoku, but specifically a cat demon which is capable of great curses after killing many of its own kind.
  • Kodoku (1.1): A specific kind of demonic creature that was the survivor of a multitude of fights against other ferocious and poisonous creatures, which gains or gives the ability to curse or poison people.

This character guide is part of our ongoing Mao coverage, which includes recaps, reviews, and episode breakdowns.
